Can anyone see the pin scratch on this coin?

1839 Seated Half

Purchased raw graded AU-55 with a small pin scratch that can be seen when the coin is tilted just right. Can you see it in this image? Will it grade?

  • I think I know what you're talking about. Is it behind the head? I almost found myself trying to tilt the laptop to try and see it better image If it's just that I personally think it would grade. It doesn't appear to be a wow factor that would ruin its chances IMO

I see a scratch on the obverse and a scratch on the reverse.

Yeah, nothing too distracting though, across the chest, neck and into the field behind the head.

    edit to add:

    Very pretty coin though

Isn't a scratch that is so thin that you can only see it by tilting a coin to a certain angle usually refered to as a hairline scratch?

I think someone was trying to fix the carbon spot and it will not grade.

  • I see a scratch extending from Miss Liberty's left breast and extending into the obverse field near the head. I give it a 50-50 shot at grading since it looks thin. I have, however, seen coins in genuine holders for much less.
  • P.S. I think it is a nice coin regardless.

I am more concerned with the scratches around star 13 than that fine scratch around the head.
    Nice coin though.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • Will they see that in 7 seconds? image

Why do you ask a question about a scratch and not say where you think the scratch is?

If there's any glint of fresh metal when the coin is tilted for viewing, then no grade. If it's an old scratch across the breast, neck, and field behind head, then it probably will grade, as it doesn't look to be out of line with the rest of the coin.

The scratch won't keep it from grading.

The scratch your talking about, is it across her chest? If so, I think less concern?

The one going through the neck doesn't look too bad.

The actual scratch is visible when the coin is tilted. It's horizontal, on the reverse in the right half of the eagle's wing on the 3:00 side. Very faint, only visible when the coin is tilted on the horizontal axis.
