Yard Sale Pickups

Now that I'm back in the hobby a few months yard sale season is upon us. I haven't been to one in over ten years.

Anyone have any success with these? Ever find a gem?

I just passed 4 of them this morning going to the PO. There is one about 100 yards away. Maybe I'll check it out. You can never have enough '89 Topps Gregg Jefferies FUTURE STAR cards...

I had to pass on a 1989 Topps set in pages this morning. I offered 2 bucks but was turned down. If I'd have
bought it I'd have kept the pages and the album and tossed 99 % of the cards. Hey- the Nolan and a few others are pretty cool.
Edited to add. The cards owner thought the cards were worth "alot". He wasn't happy with me and I'm sure thought I was trying to pull one over on him when I said the cards had very little dollar value.

It's possible, I have never bought a cards from a garage sale but when I was a kid I put out my Dad's old Hockey (60's Howe,Orr) cards for sale and they sold asap and looking back I gave them away. Man was he mad image So if you can find a screw up like I did back in 90-91 you can get a nice score.

    Come by my house today

My wife is having her monthly yard sale and I brought out about 2 late 80's/early 90's factory sealed sets for $4 each and about 20 traded sets for $2 each and about a dozen binders filled with pages and 87-92 cards for $4 each. Have already sold almost $40 so far today...considering its all about worthless ..that pretty good

My neighborhood is having their annual garage sales this weekend. My son and I went to about 12 of them and i found nothing at all in the way of any type of sports cards. Very disappointed to say the least. I did buy 2 dozen brand new golf balls still in the sleeves and boxes for $4.00.

I'm not an avid garage saler, but I've yet to see any cards whatsoever at a garage sale.

When I was a kid, my parents would have a garage sale. I sold some, and did pretty well two of the three years. Probably $75 each time. One time I made $2. In August. When it was 105 degrees. 100% humidity. Funnn.

I haven't been to any yard sales this year- too much soccer and baseball, but last week my brother picked up 100+ 1964 Topps Beatles cards- 50 CENTS for the entire lot. A wide range condition wise. I have never found anything great, but once I picked up a Ripken bobblehead for $1.

Last year i picked up a 1953 bowman color leo durocher, 1961 brooks robinson PSA 6, 1969 brooks robinson PSA 7, and a 1969 jim palmer PSA 8 at a yard sale. It was a huge community yard sale though and that was all i found.
    Still a couple nice pickups.

I know it isn't cards but the Comic Book Men on AMC had a find at a yard sale on one of their shows.

I've had success selling Royals and Cardinals lots (I live in MO) and selling cards by the box or inch (ya, 86-93). Seems as the day gets older I'll pretty much sell it for anything.

I came across a good garage sale in the mid 90's that had a lot of rookies and sets on the cheap but pretty much people want to sell and 89 topps set for $25 bucks and usually nothing good can be found. But I'm sure there are ones that pop up with 60's 70's and early 80's! I want to hear some stories.

My wife and I set up at our community yard sale today -- we've done the past few years and I'm always surprised at how much we sell -- sold $500 worth of carp today.

I put out some bulk "junk" that a friend dumped on me a few months ago that included several complete sets -- 1983-94 baseball -- a 3200-count box of mid-grade 77 Topps, etc.

Nothing nice but I was willing to fill someone's truck with 20 complete sets and another 10,000+ cards for $50-$100.

Long story short -- there was absolutely zero interest. I could have had a '52 Mantle in there and not a single person (out of several hundred that browsed through our stuff) would have cared.

I ended up handing out about a dozen binders of misc stuff to some kids late in the day like it was Halloween.

    Next stop Craig's List.

The guy who bought the 1964 Topps Stand Up full 120 Pack wax box for like 20.00 is a highlight. That was like 5 years ago I think.

It was a yard sale purchase

My last yard/garage sale pickups in the sports collectibles field (not counting sports related books) were about 2 years ago - I paid $10 for a Pujols Bigheads figurine and 2 hockey McFarlanes (Heatley and I don't remember the other).

I hit the motherload a few years back. This older lady had a box of 1950's and 1960's for $4 for the entire box. This was before I got back into the hobby so i was going to pass on it but my wife said that for $4 it will give me something to look through for the rest of the weekend. I pulled out about 300 commons, stars, and semi stars from the 1950's and 1960 including the complete set of 1959 fleer Ted Williams, 4 mickey mantle cards, 2 Peter Rose rookies, Carl Yaz rookie, and so much more. It was the best I could of ever imagined.

My wife thought we would make a lot of money selling all of it but little did she know I now spent thousands picking up more cards and jumped back into the hobby all over again.

I quit going to Garage sales, but back in the day I would hit many as possible on Saturday morning. I've done well on pick ups. many items I have flipped for a quick profit, but two stand out. both I paid $1.00 for.

A early 50's 18x22inch autographed lithograph of Eiseinhower. I bought it and took it straight to an autograph dealer and sold it for $500.

a Dr Who pin, still in the packaging, sold for $600 on ebay. it was a bidding war between two collectors. The guy that won it said he had a half dozen pins, but never seen one still in the package

  • My neighborhood had it's annual sale a few weeks ago and I put out 3, 800 ct. boxes of 77, 78, & 79 commons/minor stars and some hand collatated baseball and baseketball sets. I also had about 8 wax boxes of 80' & 90's baseball, basketball and football and some misc. stuff. About 2 hours in I had a guy offer me $150 for everything on the table and I let it go home with him.
