Barry US Bonds, its a shame he got derailed by ped abuse as he had all the tools without them to be a HOF'er.

I remember me and my buddies stockpiling the '87 Fleer because we we were under the impresion there were alot less of those compared to the Topps and Donruss, not sure if thats true or not.

For me - so sad it's funny: I did the same for Sam Horn. Imagine if he was on the juice!

For the Bonds rookies though it's difficult to say if the values are low because of him, or because of the production/population numbers- just so many thousands if not millions out there standing in queue for the encapsulator.

My biggest horde was Wally Joyner, I remember trading countless Pete Incaviglias to my buddy for Joyner cards!

Regardless of the outcome of my hordes of Darryl strawberries, Dwight Goodens and Barry Bonds those days of ripping open wax upon wax packs and ever so carefully putting them in the little plastic sleeves then the hazardous task of placing it into the hard plastic without dinging a corner were the some of the best card collecting memories for me as a kid.

All the money I wasted was worth it.

Same thing here, Joyner was the guy I hoarded. Him and Luis Polonia; have hundreds. I too went crazy on the Fleer and Donruss early 80's stuff, I think we all did. Joke was on us, but I am really a collector, so all my stuff, good and bad gets treated the same. I prolly have 100,000 cards from the 80's, outta control.

I feel better about Todd VanPoppel & Ryan Klelso or however his name was spelled. Oh & can't forget Andujar Cedeno of the Astros.

I would like to travel back in time, find that younger me, and slap him in the head.

Lets not put Van Poppel and Klesko in the same sentence anymore. Klesko had a nice run in the MLB and was a meaningful contributor on several division winners in ATL. He didn't turn out to be the greatest 1B of all time, but he had a nice run.

    RE: Klesko & Van Poppel

You are right in that is is very true they don't compare as players but as cards they do. At least for a 17 year old kid loading up on their 1991 Fleer Gold Leaf rookies with all my extra cash. I must have bought 20 of each of them which was a lot of money that could have been spent on girls, movies, fast food, beer, etc!

I remember getting a box of my "old cards" from my mom several years back and in there were stacks of those 2 cards in nice pretty top holders, screw downs, & magnetic holders! It was fun to look at them and then send them and almost everything else to the recycle bin.

Yup, me too. I remember 87 Fleers going for like $5 a pack and we thought that was nuts and meant they were so rare. The 87D's were like $2 and the topps were a buck. We bought boxes upon boxes of the fleer and Donruss. I think in comparison to the Donruss and Topps, the Fleer is rarer, but it's all way too overproduces

I just remember we had an impossible time pulling the 87F Wally Joyner. It seemed like that card was a major Short Print because we would never get one and when we did it was so amazing

I was a huge Ryan Klesko fan! My dad used to get us tickets to go to the Double AA baseball games in Orlando and I remember watching Klesko launch a 550+++ bomb. The stadium backs up to the Orlando Citrus Bowl and he hit the stadium at least 100 feet up. Just crushed that baby.

I bought his Leaf Gold rookie immediately for $14 and thought it was going to the moon.

I also collected the minor league cards and his glossy 1990 Best card was a huge favorite of mine and when it started climbing in the Beckett with the Frank Thomas and other cards from the set I thought I was rich LOL image

I can't believe there is someone else on this thread with way too many Luis Polonia rookies. I was 11 when I decided to hoard those.

Traded a almost complete 75 Topps set for a bunch of Gregg Jeffries RC'S back in 89-90 image

I remember hoarding all three Dwight Gooden rookie cards back in 1985, although in retrospect, all three were pretty dull cards--boring posed shots in his batting practice jersey. I liked the Topps Record Breaker card photo a lot better, as well as the 1984 Topps Traded action photo, but those apparently weren't actual "rookie cards" for some reason.

This is a big reason why I ultimately never cared for the whole "rookie card" craze--the cards with photos that I actually liked weren't as good of an "investment" as the ugly cards because of unwritten rules that seemed, frankly, arbitrary. That said I did manage to sell eight or nine 1985 Topps Gooden RC's for something like a couple of dollars each, which was probably one of the better investment returns I've ever enjoyed, percentagewise.

I think the reason why Barry Bonds cards have plummeted is because he used PED's and it has nothing to do with the thousand if not million of his rookie cards out on the market . Lets take a look at the 1989 Ken Griffey Jr Upper Deck rookie there's million of those cards and still sell for over $200+ for a PSA 10. Barry is still one of my favorite players of all time with or without PED's he still a HOFer in my book. I just picked this up from the SCP auction the other night.
