UPDATE: Best pen to use on a baseball? Results

I'm sure this was posted previously and if so I apologize for the double question. I'm was able to gain tickets to the Yankees batting practice in a few weeks and I will be able to get a few items signed.

Im not an autograph collector so I was curious what the best pen and type of baseball to take with me to the game? Any other items you would recommend to bring?

If you can find them, the Uni-ball Jetstream ball point pen works the best IMHO. However, if you can't find those the regular Bic Ultra Round stic works great. Just make sure you test it out to make sure its writing smoothly before you hand it to the player. Blue ink also seems to hold up better over time and is less prone to yellowing or fading.

NEVER use a Sharpie on a baseball. Over time the ink will bleed into the leather, creating a cloudy mess.

Also, always use an Official Major League Baseball. If you can't afford Major League Baseballs get something else signed. Good luck!
Always looking to buy old Minnesota Twins and Vikings memorabilia like Nodders, Photo Pennants, and Photo Buttons.
  • Thanks everyone, exactly what I was looking for

When I was a kid got to meet Ernie Banks at a company banquet. They got all the kids at the banquet these cheap shiney baseballs and Ernie signed it with a sharpie. Didnt last long....
  • IMO a single signed Official Ball is the best so bring several balls if you can as they are more easily sold or traded than a multisigned item with just a few sigs. If you decide to keep them they can always be displayed with the signature showing as opposed to a multisigned ball that will hide most of the sigs on a display.

You can buy Official Major League Baseballs at Target for around $15 each. So make sure (if you do single signed balls) that you're getting only the stars on those. A team signed ball would be cool too...

It's tough to get the whole team to sign at BP. A ball with 4 or 5 sigs may be perfect for you as a remembrance but to the majority of buyers a single signed ball always sells better. However what you can do is start a multisigned ball and then add to it if an autograph guest comes to town and try to build a team ball. Whatever you decide I'm sure you'll have a blast. Good luck.

This is a good idea. I may start the team ball and have my hot wife get the stars auto.

I sold a two Mantle Topps cards PSA/DNA one was by a pen and the other a sharpie, the pen went for almost half of what the sharpie went for so collectors like sharpies for cards image
  • Thanks for the comments and auto tips. My wife and I had a great time at the game. We were able to get Robinson Cano's auto and I just missed Paul O'Neil. He signed for the guy standing next to me and walked off just as I asked. Here are some of the photos:
