What is the best way to submit an 1831 $5 gold for grading

A customer comes in with this and after looking up the price, I am not sure how to send this in. If it were me and I had the funds I might just fly out to the office and hand it to them myself.
But if we are going to have the chance to purchase, it may be better to send in from here. FED EX? Insured mail? Just not sure as it is a high value coin.
Any opinions appreciated. We do not usually deal in coins of this value.
Regards,

Jim

Don't send it FedEx unless you have private insurance to cover the coin. I would send it slow boat USPS Registered Mail. You could pay more and Express Mail it with insurance and it will be there overnight if cost is no object.

USPS registered insured is the preferred method for me and I think PCGS, too.

Registered is the only way to go for that coin.

Definitely Registered Mail, with appropriate insurance.

Make sure the customer knows how long this can take, though. RM is very secure, but not easily tracked (by the customer) while in transit, and can be frustratingly slow.

usps registered insured. everyone that touches that package has to sign for it. you want a nice paper trail on that one.
  • Registered/insured shipping to grading service--PCGS/NGC, and then return insurance and shipping based on value once graded walkthrough.

Alternative shipping is overnight express and an external insurer based on value.

But I would get an appraisal by an expert before you send it out. If it's impaired, etc., scaling back insurance would be smart.

Registered Mail insurance limit is $25,000 and assuming the coin is of any collectable condition, it will be worth more than that. I would call G4S International, who is who I use for high value shipment insurance. They will insure up to $100,000 using FedEx, USPS Express Mail, or USPS Registered Mail. The cost would be nearly the same as a plane ticket though, and I think that would be the more fun route.

This is my preference. But, I live in Las Vegas and PCGS does at least 4 shows a year here!
