opinions on these two pennies

coinbufcoinbuf Posts: 11,365 ✭✭✭✭✭
So give me your thoughts one these two coins, the first is a solid MS66 but does how do you see the toining, good, bad, neutral?? Both sets of pics were taken by Jeremy, both coins have loads of luster(mutted on the 26-d obv) and both are raw so any marks are on the coins. Lets hear it.

On this second one I'm wondering about the toining does it look ok, to me the obv looks very matte-like and I wonder if someone tried to improve this coin at some time or other.

    The 1936-S looks fine.

As for the 1926-D, the carbon on the reverse just kills it.

I have to wonder if the 26-D has been dipped and retoned. In any case, the carbon spotting on the reverse means it has very poor eye-appeal.

36 S will grade...probably as a 63RB due to the hits on the face.

26 D may not grade - questionable color??? ....and...flat cheekbone, numerous marks on shoulder, and the carbon spots. 26 D are not know for sharp strikes. Strike on the reverse is stunning!

36-s...yeah i could see it "sneaking in" a 66bn...toning is neutral here but it has a very even skin...nice example with original skin
26-d...more likely a 63 then a 64brn...possible old dip and retoned...color is fine but i see zero luster...coin is just flat

    Imma guess 36 - MS65RB and the 26 GEN - cleaned.

36-S is decent but not spectacular, 26-D is a dog.

    I don't think the '36-S is a "solid MS66". I'd guess 64 with a shot at 65. I don't think it's wise to grade a $40 coin.

I love the photos of the '26-D, just not the coin. The diseased reverse kills it for me. I don't think PCGS will go for the toning. It might even BB for environmental damage.

Agree. The spots on the reverse of the second coin are really bad.

I think the carbon spots have not been worked on. I on the other hand think the 36-s is cleaned.

Weak strike on the 36S and the chatter would keep it in the 64 range at best.
The 26D has been boinked with the reverse showing the evidence.
    Neither should see a TPG.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
