1 card worth $1,500 to $2,000; which auction house are you using?

I have one card worth $1,500 to $2,000. Which auction house would you use? (excluding REA because they just ended for the year)

Mainstream card sell yourself on ebay or here. Oddball or tough issue use PWCC.

    List it yourself

Put an ad on craigslist and see if there is an e-bay seller that can help you sell it under their name. Then buy the card yourself with a fake money order and get the payment from the middle man right away. Then keep the money and the card, and follow up the scam by badmouthing the middle man here on the boards.

(sorry for the outburst, really I would just post it on e-bay. It's a big card, but not outrageous or anything)

  • If the card is high end for the grade, PWCC has the best scans and presentation in the business and I feel you'll get more.
On the other hand, if it's a run of the mill, IMO you can use either PWCC or Probstein
If it's a low end for the grade and has obvious flaws, those flaws will be very obvious with PWCC scans. Use Probstein

That is my personal rule of thumb as I use both.

    Good Luck

Listing a year & sport should get you at least 1 honest (non-ebay) opinion.

I don't understand why this thread would be locked? Seriously, I don't. Could someone explain?

The card is a 1968 Topps 3D Curt Flood PSA 7. I have it listed on Ebay now. Here is the link.

I currently have the same dilemma. I just recently received my new SMR in the mail and was considering which auction house to dump it on, I mean consign it to. It has General Custard on the cover. Which auction house should I choose to maximize my return?

On the OP's card, if it's worth 1500-2000, then list it yourself on Ebay with a BIN of 2000 and Best Offer and see what interest it receives. If you don't want to sell it yourself then choose the fee schedule that brings you in the most money.

I see you do have it listed on Ebay so that is the best way to go. If there's not a lot of interest to a retail customer with your listing then there won't be a lot of retail interest if it's consigned to an Ebay seller for auction.

If you go with Prostein, ask for a contract and a website with the terms clearly spelled out.

I did not crack and regrade. I did buy the PSA 5 but it goes in my collection. I bought the PSA 7 last year knowing it was only temporary until I could find a lower graded card. I found the PSA 5 and now I am trying to sell the PSA 7.

like playing piñata with a beehive.

    sweet card Shane.
  • That five has a bad top left corner... 7 does not... Obviously not a crack.

But I have to agree with KB, your best bet is to sit on it to maximize, if you send it to auction I think you will be disappointed on this card.

FYI - there are no PWCC June auctions. So if you need it sold quickly - I'd go with Probstein.

edit......the auction house I recommended was the same one where you bought your card (I assume you were looking elsewhere)

  • CDsNuts
  • Current SCP auction would have been ideal for getting buyers to see it. Still would be a good choice in the future
  • You've got it listed properly, with a fine picture, and you have plenty of feedback...consigning it to another ebay seller makes no sense. You've already done all the legwork.

And I have to agree that sending it to an auction house is a serious gamble. At this point 90% of the collectors out there are checking ebay auctions on a fairly regular basis. If you send it to an auction house you're taking a real risk that it's going to sell for significantly under what you want. This is especially true because it's kind of a niche card that not everyone wants (or knows the value of)...this isn't a Mantle 1951 Bowman. Even if you got what you wanted, you're consignment fee for a card like that would likely be 15%+.

Leave it up as a bin/bo until you find it a new home. If you're desperate to sell, leave it up as a bin/bo for a few weeks and if no one bites, take your chance with 7/10 day auction. You almost certainly will not do worse than at Memory Lane, Hunt, Heritage...

I would not run that same card back thru Ebay since that is where you got it from. I would go with Memory Lane or Huggins and Scott since, according to VCP, that is where that particular card has performed the best most recently.

Contact them all and see who gives you the best terms or you gives you the most confidence. I think everyone gets everything (catalogs) from all of them anyway. I think sometimes the wild bids become more a function of whom happens to see what when than because of a particular auction house. They all seem to have wild bids on various items at various times.
