awesome video inside SF Mint - new ASE & S mint quarters

Check out this video of a news report from a local SF station on the 75th Anniversary minting going on in the SF Mint. Included are great shots of the upcoming 2 coin ASE set :

SF Mint video

I wasn't aware of the S mint quarter being put into circulation . . . very cool.

The Mint person was wrong on one point. He said there had not been "S" mint mark coins in circulation since the 50's. Not sure off the top of my head when they quit making San Francisco coins for circulation after the 1968 return of the "S" mint mark but it was in the early 70's.

I get 1974-S Lincolns in my change all of the time.

Not sure about these new quarters w/ S mint marks.... doubt I'll ever see one and I live in California. it's been a few years since the parks quarters have been out and I've NEVER gotten one in my change, even w/ a P or a D mintmark!!! Well, except for in my change at a coin shop, but that doesn't count image

In 1968 when the San Francisco Mint started making coins again I paid $2 a roll for 1968-S cents at the local coin club from a dealer. I don't think they are worth that now. In 1968 you could still buy things for 1¢. Gum machines took a cent. I will say Bazooka Gum was 1¢ at the candy counter. Other candy was still priced at 1¢. Back to the original thought of this post. The hype was great over the reappearance of "S" mint coins in circulation. Collectors and investors were snatching them up as fast as they could lay hands on them. The collectors did alright, the investors went kabust.

Edited to add: I just bought 2 rolls of the 68-S cents. I don't remember seeing rolls of 68-S Nickels though.

Well, the only benefit I see is silver is dropping so much they might be giving these sets away in boxes of cereal soon.

The Travel Channel series 'Off Limits' with Don Wildman gained video access to the Denver Mint as was shown on last night's broadcast. Very cool segment showing the minting of coins and making of dies.

S Mint Lincolns were produced from 1968 to 1974 and S Mint Jeffersons were produced from 1968 to 1970 to address the National coin shortages.

These runs were "overflow runs" similar to whats occurring with the Silver Eagles and were not considered regular production. San Francisco ceased producing regular circulation coinage in 1955.

    Uhhhh............nothing.

Aren't they still considered nothing today?

    I can't believe I said that! image

Actually, I forgot about those but again, they were special runs in an attempt to address a perceived shortage or the newest and hopefully, most popular coin in the US Mints arsenal and we all know what happened to that idea!

Agreed... in fact, I had the rare pleasure of finding a 1972-S Lincoln Cent in pocket change a few days ago! I was pretty excited, and look forward to seeing SF back on the coin map!

i happen to like the sba dollar so please stop making fun of it. also all those s minted quarters will not end up in circulation on purpose the will go into mint sets like always and what a nice way to put proof quarters in the same container so that there will be scuff marks on them and make them worth less.
  • So there will be business struck "S" quarters in circ.?

    sure sounds like it ..

Looks like Coin albums will have to do a redo if they are made with the usual P - D circulated quarters

So true. One of my earliest attempts to "hit one out of the park" in coin collectibles was buying a $1000 bag of 1980-s SBA from the mint. That was strike one. I believe I spent most of them.

With the addition of a third Reverse Proof this year I hope this becomes a new series and produced in the years to come. The S quarters will be interesting too - who knows it might be a good thing.

You know I had completely forgotten the SBA's with "S" mint marks made for circulation and I am trying to put together a set of SBA's.

Ummm........."for circulation" means for circulation, not mint sets. Unless you're really meaning Proof Sets?

Adding yet another coin to the annual "Mint Sets" is just gonna drive the price up yet further.

Would be nice to know which S mint quarters are going to be released into circulation. There's basically nothing about this on the web except for the linked video.

clearly they are being produced, in the video they are in the bin - S mintmarked

    special set?

it also looks like the edges are of the 90% silver composition.......but I dont think they would be sending those in a big bin.....so my eyes must be deceiving me....

    probably clad

Apparently the 2012-S clad unc. quarters will be limited editions for collectors, like recent P and D Kennedy halves.
