Post your beautiful Mint State Lincolns

WingedLiberty1957WingedLiberty1957 Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭✭✭
This is one of the most beautiful Mint State Lincoln Cents in my collection.

This was an NGC MS66image RB that crossed to PCGS MS65 RB (grade and photo came in yesterday). I bought this back in March for $100 off eBay in an open auction.

That is a beautiful 57 mint set lincoln. The mint sets with the pink paper (some 56's, some 57's and a few 58's) sure did produce some dramatic and rich toning schemes.

Since you asked about rivals I'll post a few and will start by sticking to that 57D date and mint mark:

Nice '57-Ds! I know the look is enhanced a little as Phil tries to bring out the color. But I'm sure they're beautiful nonetheless.

Most beautiful MS Lincoln ever? No, I don't think so. Not even close. But I guess we're talking taste.

    Someone post Stewart's 1919, please.

First one is slightly enhanced, the second two are more dramatic and bright in hand.

Yes it is. There are so many beautiful MS Lincolns but that 1919 ranks right up there.

Fantastic specimens Coppercolor! I'm loving them.

Since we seem to be on a 1957-D roll ... this is another favorite of mine from my collection. The reverse of this one is a bit lacking, but the obverse is killer.

This coin was already PCGS graded and slabbed as MS66 RB when I bought this for $32 off eBay in December 2011. That price barely covered the sellers slabbing costs, so clearly this was a huge bargain.

And this crazy rainbow, minted one year later (same mint). The reverse is so neon, it's easy to miss the beautiful and subtle coloration of the obverse, which has a toning pattern some people term "woody" for it's wood grain-like effect. This coin packs an amazing 1-2 punch.

It's interesting how the details of the coin were starting to be lost by 1958, notice the smoothness (flatness) of Lincolns head . The Denver Mint was in dire need of retooling the dies by the late 1950's.

I bought this raw coin for $75 off eBay in March 2012 and PCGS graded it MS65 BN a few weeks ago.

This is another 1957-D I bought last year. It's in an NGC MS67image slab and PCGS would not cross this at grade so I left it in the NGC slab.

Lots of nicely toned coins out there from the 1950s... but there are some nice ones out there from other dates too but not nearly as easy to find! I'd put my best 1909 VDBs in the running for some of the most beautiful out there...

Touche' Illini, you make a good point about more difficult dates to find with color (surely the late 50's are the rock stars). You've posted:
some monster 09's that make a great addition to the post:

I have a couple nice 57's still sitting in a mint set. I've often thought of having the nicest submitted but
when it comes down to it, I like them too much as part of the whole mint set to pop them out.

"Illini", "Coppercolor", and "Robec" ... Great 1909's!!! There is something about coins from the first issue year that's always a bit special.

And nice 1945 "MMOTX"!!! You should get that green monster TrueView photographed.

"Meltdown", your 1957-D examples still in the original cardboard Mint Set holder are stunning -- and it's cool seeing them that way (original and untouched).

I also have some 1909's that are special.

"Lkeigwin", I hear you about that MS69 1919, that's probably the most perfect looking OLD Lincoln and might be one of the most valuable MS Lincolns, but somehow the colorful ones just have more drama (at least in my eye). However I do realize there are collectors that greatly prefer perfect-looking mint-fresh reds that look like they just rolled off the presses. The detail on that 1919 is utterly amazing. That would be another interesting post though ("The most valuable MS Lincoln"). I think your submission would vie for that title. Or maybe it would be some high grade examples of the rarity years (1909SVDB, 1914D, 1922)?? I don't collect the rarities, so I am not as familiar with them.

In any case, these two 1909vdb's graded MS64BN and MS65RB, respectively:

For me, extreme color does not make a coin beautiful. Any artist can slap paint on canvas. There's a lot more to it than that. But I do understand the allure of the bright and unusual and I love seeing true images.

Here are some of my favorites.

Lance, I LOVE your 1911 and 1915 ... I might be wierd, but I much prefer those two over that perfect MS69 1919 (based purely on eye appeal). Even though that 1919 is probably worth 100x (1000x??) more.

By the way, when you said "any artist can slap paint on a canvas" ... it made me laugh out loud!!

It just goes to show you how different we all are as collectors.

God Bless us all and all our little quirks on what we like!! I think the differences we all have makes collecting more interesting.

And I (and my wallet) certainly appreciate have one less person competing with me when I buy these colorful monsters -- and I am not (generally) competing for coins you are buying -- so that's probably good for both of us!

This depression era 1932 MS Lincoln is also very nice. I bought this already graded and slabbed by PCGS (MS64 RB) for $119 off eBay in December 2011. This was a toning premium of about 2.2x. I haven't seen that many colorful MS Lincolns from the early 1930's (maybe because people didnt have the luxury to collect (save) coins as they were too busy using every penny to buy food??). The toning colors (especially on the obverse) almost reminds me of colors you sometimes see on Matte Proof Lincolns minted 20 years earlier. Of course the strike is NOTHING like an MPL!

This WW2 era 1944 Mint State Lincoln is also very pretty. I bought this one already slabbed by PCGS as MS65 RB off eBay in Dec 2011 for $109. I realize this is a pretty huge toning premium, however I liked this one enough to pay up. The streaks/scratches on the reverse are interesting ... they almost looks like PMD (post mint damage)?. I have no idea what might have caused that, but it didnt seem to bother PCGS when they were grading. The colors washing over the obverse bottom of the coin, makes old honest Abe look like he's wearing a pink and green smoking jacket. Tremendous luster on this one.

    in my vote you'd lose
not to be brash or anything so please take no offence

winged-one's vdb's would get my votes hands down

your vdb has a couple mute points to it
1)the intials themselves "V.D.B." are compromised on your example
2)obverse motto also shows compromise too...look at "we"
3)your rims bear a lil soft points

winged-ones vdb's exhibit needle sharp detail with no mute points as if struck from proof dies
all details are bold as bold can get
his rims are 100% complete and sharp

I received a PM about this coin earlier today and thought I'd share some additional info with everyone here. The coin is actual part of a pair of 1909 VDBs which I acquired w/ consecutive serial numbers, both grading MS66BN. Both have similar beautiful toning and are a nice matching pair and was very happy to find them and be able to get them. Last I checked the 1909 VDB is a pop 10 coin in 66BN w/ none higher in BN. I really should send them both in for TrueViews sometime as I think it would help show the beauty of these two. Here are the only other photos I have handy of them both:
