My 2 World Series Experiences

I just got some items back from my local frame shop and thought I'd share them with the forum. I grew up in LA and am a huge Dodgers fan. My Dad and his business partners shared Dodgers seasons tickets, so I went to a lot of games as a kid. Some of my earliest memories are being at Dodger Stadium, eating Cracker Jacks and Carnation frozen malts, watching guys like Steve Sax, Orel Hershiser, etc. I was 12 years old in 1988 and was lucky enough to attend Game 1 of the 88 World Series. I can still remember the entire crowd of 55,000 going crazy as Gibson limps to the plate and how bad his first couple of swings looked. I'm pretty sure I held my breath as he hit the ball in air and I was hoping and praying that it was hit hard enough. When the ball cleared the fence, the entire place went nuts and the celebration was incredible. I think we stayed about an hour after the game, the moment was so surreal that nobody wanted to leave the stadium. Vin Scully summed up the moment perfectly when he said "In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!" I managed to hold onto my ticket from the game all these years and had it framed with a Kirk Gibson signed bat and signed photo.

Well, as luck would have it, I married a die-hard Cardinals fan. (At least she's not a Giants fan, that would've been a deal breaker!) My wife grew up in St. Louis and her entire family bleeds Cardinal red. So early on in our marriage, I agreed to cheer for the Cards and she agreed to cheer for the Dodgers, except when they play each other. I didn't have a problem with this arrangement as the Cards are a great franchise and I loved watching Pujols play. My wife had told me numerous times that if the Cardinals ever went to the Series, that she wanted to go. We weren't in a position financially to attend the 2004 or the 2006 series. When the Cards miraculously qualified for the 2011 playoffs, I told my wife that we would go to the World Series if they made it. (In the back of my mind I thought there was no way they'd get past both the Phillies and the Brewers.)
Of course the Cards stayed hot and beat both the Phils and Brews to make the World Series. With my work schedule, the only game we could attend was Game 7. So I bought 2 tickets off Stubhub and refundable plane tickets from Southwest. My wife got so nervous during Game 6 that she couldn't watch it after the Rangers went ahead 7-4 in the 7th. I found myself going through a rollercoaster of emotions because at this point I really wanted the Cards to win and I wanted to go to Game 7. She finally came downstairs after she heard my yelling when Freese hit the walk-off in the 11th. We flew out to St. Louis the next morning and watched the Cards clinch the Series in an incredible game. We stayed for the trophy presentation and then celebrated in the streets with all the fans until about 2am. My wife got to see her team win the Series and I got to attend a Game 7, it was one of the best experiences of our lives. We took a lot of photos and framed one of them with a signed photo of Pujols from Game 3, a signed Freese photo from Game 6, and our ticket from the game. I think it turned out great, our frame shop really came through for us.

So the moral of my stories is that if you ever have the chance to attend the World Series, I would highly recommend it!
