1911 $20 Saint Question

Let's say you wanted to add a 1911 Saint to your collection. Which issue (p, d, s) and a what grade and accelerator (plus or cack), would you choose?

I am interested to know collectors' opinions on this.

Thanks.

What kind of budget are you on?

Good question - tried to leave that out to see if I could get opinions at different levels. Trying for the best value putting rarity and eye appeal above all.

How did you choose 1911? I have been in a similar boat for a couple months and I am curiuos.

1911 seems a bit more interesting than some of the more common dates but certainly common enough to have plenty of choices. There are two shelves in the price which makes it fun to find the best example just before the price jump.

Gotcha, gotcha, in my research I have determined I would rather have the more common date in a higher grade, say PCGS MS65 or 66 then a less common date graded at say PCGS MS62 or 63. Board what are your thoughts?

    I'd approach it 2 ways.

The first is to get the most bang for the buck in gold....that would be a MS64 1911-d w/o + or CAC that is either very solid for the grade or CACable.
Price paid should be essentially generic gold 64 Saint price. This would be my choice. The pop tops worth 5 figures and up is where the action will be in this
series imo. But few have the cash or the contacts to seek out those coins.

The second choice is to get as close to the 65 grade in a scarcer date like the 11-s or 11. 1911 has some room to grow in the 64+ or 64 CAC if the coin is truly worthy.
But you might have better luck finding a nice PQ 11-s w/o a premium attached. An 11-s in 64 + or CAC is worthy as well if the premium is not too high. An 11-d in 66 CAC
is a reasonable choice as well since there is strong buying support for type at $3400-$3600. There is a wide demand for nice 66's and the 11-d is almost considered a common
date yet quite a bit scarcer than the 1924-1928 Phillies.

well, that's a really open ended question. it depends on your goals. if you're looking for a coin with collector value, go with a P or S in 64 or higher condition. if you're looking to get into one for bullion value, go with the D in 62 or 63 condition. personally, i'd choose an S mint example in 64 condition because the strikes are usually better and the luster is pretty frosty.

if you're just choosing 1911 because it's interesting...why not go with a 1913? that's the year they enacted the fed...which ultimately took us off the gold standard. i think that's a more interesting date. why is 1911 interesting to you? just curious.

    anyway, hope this helps.

Strictly by the numbers. The 1911(P) in MS 63 appears to give the most bang for your buck. Overall scarcity of over 1.8:1 vs. S and 4:1 vs D for a modest premium.
