Need help for an article

Hi. Need help for an article.

Are there "seasonal price changes" for various sports collectibles?

For example, do baseball collectibles have better prices during baseball season than during the off season?

Do football collectbibles do better during the football season?

Or are price differences negligible based on the "season"?

thanks.

I would say for all sports, in season prices are better than out of season with baseball probably having the least difference. When we someone like Jeremy Lin emerge, that only happens when the person is actually playing their sport.

i've noticed that when the Pittsburgh Steelers are actually competing during their season, Steelers collectors go nuts, particularly when the team does well.......which is pretty much all the time. image

i think this applies to several pro sports teams with large followings which extend far beyond their region or locality.

thanks guys. Is their a "percentage" factor to this? Can you spot, for example, a ten percent price difference in season vs non season pricing?

I see increases whenever the respective sports start a new season, and during the playoffs, especially with the teams involved in the playoffs. Also, Olympic-related athletes' cards/memorabilia goes up during their Olympics. For example, Michael Phelps signed cards when from ~$30 to over $500 during the last Summer Olympic games.

Media, performance then more media. Oh, and then eBay.

I think it may be difficult to prove your theory without specifying whether or not the player is active or inactive. Deaths can cause a spike in card prices or a HOF induction. Inactive players can vary. Active players such as Josh Hamilton or Jeremy Lin experience hot streaks that can cause bumps in prices.

I think as a general rule it is better in season, but not sure I would say that for retired players so much.

I used to dabble on eTopps several years ago. eTopps provided a price history for each card. I seem to recall that prices were highest at the start of the particular season and steadily declined during the season - so lowest value was just after season end. Obviously barring hot player performance during that season (ie, Josh Hamilton).

What Beck and drc said. If the player is active, values can be affected by their performance during the season, so prices could be higher (or lower) for a particular card during the season. For retired players, I think it has little impact. If talking about high grade vintage cards, I think market prices have more to do with how many collectors are chasing a particular set at a given time.

What I have seen in the Pro Football HOF Rookie set is June and July seem to be a bit soft for the mid and lower priced cards. Under $125. I have played this game for a few years for my set. Tracking down a card in June for $60 that I would have paid $75 or $80 during the season. I would say there is a 15-20% savings for these cards at this time. Now, that sellers know this and don't offer up a lot of cards at this time either. The other time the the HOF rookies spike is when they announce the class and the first week or so of the season. But this spike is not that large, I think it is just the collectors getting back into the swing of things.

As for active players I cant answer that because I don't collect them.
