newp lowball morgan grade help please

bronco2078bronco2078 Posts: 10,244 ✭✭✭✭✭

I grabbed this the other day I was thinking it was a FR02 coin . I have tried to save a few of these from the melt bucket and it hasn't worked out in the past. If they are too good people don't want them for lowball sets if they are too worn they are unidentifiable and just ugly bullion. would this make the cut ? It has lots of wear but nice clear mintmark and date

The person I bought it from had about 6 pocket pieces and I grabbed this but wanted to see what the general opinion of it was before I grab any more . One was an indian head quarter eagle the rest were morgan and peace dollars

If paying melt values, I wouldn't be super stoked about it but you can't go wrong especially with metal prices were they're at.

The seller offered them to me for 20 bucks each. I will go back to see him today and look again. For some reason he was selling all 90% at 20x face , normally people want more for dollars than the smaller coins so I didn't want to get a lot of the worn ones if I could get AU coins for the same price.

That coin I picked out seemed like the best shot for lowball coins. One of the peace dollars was the most worn coin I have ever seen , there was only a shadow of liberty's head visible but there was no way to tell the date.

2 of the other morgans were a little worse than this one but scratches on one were bad and the other had a lump of solder that made me think it had been a belt buckle.

If this coin is in too good a shape then I can always put it in my own pocket for a few years for seasoning.

I think you may be looking for a coin where the date is just visible

When I would looking for the PO01s, that coin would stay in the melt bucket!! It's a 3 or a 4.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I think those are pretty cool regardless, especially at $20

As for the Photograde, how can they grade it PO1 if you can tell the date or the MM? Looks like a slug to me

In hand the obverse is better than the PO1 and similar to the FR2 . It shows less of the word liberty and the head in general but more of the date and motto. The reverse shows no detail in the feathers like the FR2 they show.

After careful analysis from looking at the photograde I have decided its PO1 with a gold bean.

I went back today and didn't like the other low end coins so I grabbed 2 XF common dates for 20 each and he offered me 4 ASE's for 30$ each. one of them was a 1996 so I'm happy .

I can't decide if he is very generous or very nervous about silver dropping but I am going to visit once a week and drop a few hundred till the prices go up.

It looks as if it could be a counterfeit- seriously
