Rick Monday and that American Flag

What a great play to be remembered by! Now my question is what ever happened to this American Flag? I would imagine that it would actually be a great piece of baseball memorabilia.

  • This is probably my favorite sports moment ever!! I showed this to both of my kids a few years ago, and it is a proud tearful family favorite. Rick Monday is a stud.

Stooge thanks for sharing, and I hope many more people that may have never seen this video get a chance to view it.

I believe that Rick Monday kept the flag and still has it in his possession.

I remember watching the Cubs game as I was known to do and saw this one live. I was probably only 10 or 12 and didnt fully grasp what really happened but remember thinking Rick Monday not only had a cool name but he just did something really cool. I believe I heard him interviewed a few years ago and he said he still has the flag.

I heard Tommy LaSorda a say a few years ago that he saw the guys from the third base coaches box and was on his way out to kick these guys ass if someone else didnt get to them first.

That makes me happy to hear if it is true. I would hate to see that flag get destroyed, or sit in an evidence box in storage at the police station where those 2 Morons were taken.

Glad everyone enjoys this post. I was thinking about it when I heard about the woman that walked out onto the court at the Lakers vs. Nuggets game. (Fans interrupting a game)

Strike the Tommy LaSorda comment as I see it is on the YouTube video. I guess I should watch the video before commenting!

Rick Monday does still have the flag. He was interviewed by Cubs announcer Len Kasper when the Dodgers were in town last week and was asked about it.

Watching the game from Chicago was very frustrating since they wouldn't show what was going on. Clearly, the TV field director for the Cubs was instructed, or knew, not to film the destruction of the flag, the announcers just kept on and on about how terrible this is without describing what was happening. Finally, the announcers started to cheer Rick, and then described what happened, but we never saw the event live in Chicago, and our TV announcers kind of dropped the ball in the description. The cameras focused on the crowd, and it was a mystery as to why they were booing. As always ... Thanks Rick ... Great Play!

The whole stadium would have burned down before Tommy LaSorda ever made it to the outfield. image
