71 Topps Pete Rose - Opinions Needed

Been looking at this Pete Rose for awhile.

It's a real nice card. Some slight edge chipping, but that's about it. The current bid is at 177.50. Based on what you see, should I go for it or let it be?

I don't like the left edge towards the bottom

Even with the bowed photo, the borders are equal at the top and not at the bottom as the left gets skinnier. No tilt, so doesn't make sense.

  • There are better eyes on the board, but definitely looks like a high end 8 to me. Front image is a little fuzzy, but from back view, corners look good.
Ever so slight diamond doesn't bother me. Great Eye appeal
Get a consensus from some of the true experts on the board. It's goin' a lot higher than $177

Diamond cut could be right - the bottom edge on the reverse, towards the left, gets skinnier too... could go 8 with a diamond, but riskier for sure.

    I'm stuck with this card.

I'd love to get in a bidding war and win this card. It would be the crown jewel in my 71 set.

But my practical side kicks in and asks what if it doesn't meet the min size requirement, or if the corners have been touched up? Now I've dropped X-amount of money on a piece of crap card that I shouldn't have bought raw.

But then my investment side kicks in.... Comes back an 8 or better....well worth it. Below an 8 and I'll feel like an idiot for getting it.

Bosox, that bottom left edge is the only thing that keeps it from a 9, imo.

It might be ever-so slightly diamond-cut on the front. The wave of the card makes it hard to tell though.

  • You can request a better scan of the corners. Maybe they'll accommodate you. Beautiful card

Dear Lord, that second Ryan is FUGLY. No way that should be an 8. If that's an 8, your Rose is an 11. But, to me, your card deserves an 8. Very NICE.
  • It is a risk especially with 71's. Make sure the Seller has tremendous feedback and nothing about altered cards in there.

Are returns available? If not send in on 10 day level so you have time for feedback etc.

It does look like a solid 8. Good luck!

Diamond cut Take 2 is HIDEOUS.

Sadly, no returns. On the other hand, their feedback is immaculate. They've sold some vintage cards, no blemishes on those transactions.

Another thing though. I have 71 Rose, and even though my set card is in crummy shape, his hat is a solid, bright red. On the other hand, on this Rose card, his hat looks blotchy and not solid at all. Could that affect its potential grade? Or am I just nitpicking?

  • What I's that curved line from his hand into the stadium seats? Is it a hair or something, hopefully not an indentation... Just noticed it.

There appears to also be something near his right cheek..

is that an indentation by the #14 on his batting glove?
  • stillyzstillyz Posts: 127
I'm not sure what that is. Some sort of print line on the original proof?

My other Rose card has the same exact lines in the same exact places.

The curved line by the batting glove is very common. In my honest opinion....the price is probably going to be too high for the risk.

The curved line over his fist is on every 71 Rose I've ever seen. It's in the negative. Biggest worry I would have is the card being touched up. Very difficult to tell without actually being in the room with the card under the proper lighting.

If you want an 8, buy an 8. A couple hundred dollars more will buy you a helluva lot more in peace of mind-- especially when it comes to '71s. Trust me, I know.

Thank you all for your thoughts and opinions.

If the card stays under $250-275, I'm bidding. It's currently at $202.

If I win it, I'll do a 10 day sub, or possibly a 5 day.

Amazed this card went for over $300.

    eBay Rose Link

I was also bidding on this lot as well. There's some nice cards in there, 1st series stars and rookies. Conception, Simmons RCs, plus the League Leaders. It went for $431.

The curvature in the scan of this card causes a bit of distortion, so its hard to say much about possible diamond cut
or tilt. But that's not what should conern you.

I've seen a few of these before, and I think its a reprint. The spotty yellow all around the cap and the fuzziness/graininess in
the picture makes it highly likely that you are looking at a card that was printed from a captured image of an actual card. That minor
image quality drop-off is kind of like when you make a Xerox copy of a photo. You lose some of the sharpness.

I'm putting a scan of a PSA 9 for comparison purposes. I checked it against this card and a few others I have in
lesser condition. I also checked it against other listed 1971 Rose cards on Ebay. There are a few on Ebay that are
similar to the one you provided, but I think they too are reprints.

I could be wrong, but I've been collecting this set in high-grade for a few decades now and my warning flags are waving. If it were me I'd
be very wary on this card. The seller may be completely legitimate and unaware.

Just remember, a PSA 8 will run you $375-$450 and there would be peace of mind.

    Hope this helps.

Seller allegidly got these cards from an 'estate sale'. Whatever that means.

When this card got above $225, I did some much closer examination. The fuzziness of his cap irked me from the start - considering how red his number, etc is. 'REDS' didn't look right either; splochy or something not right. Also, I can almost read the trademark on his bat and on the eBay card, I can't. And his bat doesn't have the correct color, compared to mine, and your PSA 9. Too much there to think this is too good to be true.

I did win a McCovey, Blyleven, and Seaver cards, for $75. They are fairly nice, and will send them off to PSA (no qualifiers) when I get them. The McCovey is the nicest of the bunch, the others have centering issues. At the very least, they upgrade what I have.

I could see a raw, 'mint' Rose going for $125. But for what this went for? Unreal. I'll be watching the seller's feedback to see how satisfied the buyer is.

Good luck on the submissions. Seaver and Blyleven are both hard to get in high grade and I have seen a few reprints on these.
McCovey is less of a worry.

You don;t have your PM turned on so I cant send you a Private Message. I may have a few dozen extra minor stars and commons in
PSA 7 if you are looking. Turn on your PM and drop me a line if you want to bounce your want list against what I still have.

I don't know. It doesn't look like a reprint to me. If that's a reprint then the other lot of high end 71's has a bunch of bogus cards in it also. The winner of that card you would think is subbing that card quickly. The back looks too good to be a reprint. Let's wait and see and update this thread when someone finds out.

The Beckett value of this card is $80 in NM condition. What would the mint value be?

i dont think it is a reprint. the seller was using a camera, not a scanner, big difference in detail and even color.

the other singles he had were all very nice, your centering may vary...

    the lot looked beautiful

all cards were series 1 and 2.

i bid on the rose and lost. cant wait to hear how it turns out. i also bid on the lot and won. to me there was considerably more upside with. lot less risk.

That lot was amazing. I had planned on splurging and going 275 with about 5 minutes left (when it was 215), but then, POOF and it's over 400.

Looks to be some nice value in there. The Carlton, Niekro, Perry, and Simmons all look very nice.
