How not to buy a PSA 10

Buyer's remorse, I guess
In Feb, he (or his consignor) buys this 1/1Gibson for $2,025
1981 T PSA 10
Anyone want to guess where it finishes the second time around?
Perhaps he wants to unload it before another is graded

overvalued. w/o 1984 & a limp-off winner vs. Eck, he's a common.
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
<< <i>This might be the first time I have ever written this, but that is one terrible 10, especially for a 1 of 1. >>
Agreed, it looks more like an 8.

1992 Collectors Edge Football case?
Anyone want to guess as to what his reserve is? $2025 perhaps? LOL
Looks like a PSA 10 to me, what do you guys see that makes it an 8 in your mind?

<< <i>Kirk Gibson would've been a better football player in the NFL. Anyone know how he did in the last 4 games of that 88 series? >>
He didn't make a single out in the last 4 games! He didn't make any errors either.
<< <i>It won't sell because I'm sure his reserve is for more than he paid. He does this from time to time and those cards never sell. >>
Hello Dan.
I totally agree, but it only takes one person with an extra $2k plus to blow. Not likely, but could happen I suppose.

If you use the zoom feature, you'll see the edges and corners are weak for a 10
Also messy print areas, in bottom of pink area near his name (faded) and in the border of the upper right
All in all a weak 10, PSA missed on this one
Maybe not as low as an 8 but definitely should be graded a 9

It could happen, but I think it would be more likely to happen if he put this puppy on BIN/BO. The auction reserve turns away many potential buyers I think.

It does, I won't bid on any auction that has a reserve on it. I would put the odds of this selling about the same as me busting open an unopened pack of cards.

He's also selling an Andre the Giant PSA 9 that I believe he won over Peck (back when I think it was a Pop 1). Now it's a Pop 2 and I think Peck has the other one
Also, a 71 Alcindor PSA 10. I only know about this one because I lost out to him in the bidding.
<< <i>Is this the guy who tried to sell an unopened box of '71 Topps he didn't even own? >>
Matt, that is a good trick if you can manage it.

I purchased the second one through a dealer that I do business with and that one is obviosuly locked up in my collection permanately.
This seller from what I have seen and heard likes to buy very rare items and then try and flip them for more. The problem with that strategy is he is in many cases paying more then what a true collector is willing to pay that would normally be the high bidder.

Same guy. I think Burgundy ended up with that 71 box eventually.
At some point in the future, 4SC will produce the 2nd/3rd/4th and 5th of this current 1 of 1.

I would say this is pretty indicative that there is serious demand in the card market for this to sell for this price. 38% higher then the last sale. Impressive.
<< <i>I think there are many who thought this card would never sell for more then the past one.

I was wrong about the Gibson, but right about the Alcindor which closed for 2,816 (below reserve) or $242 less than he paid and didn't sell. Interesting to see if the Andre hits his reserve.
I obviously am interested to see how the Andre plays out and really have no clue what will happen there. On one hand the market for the cards have been quite strong, on the other hand I am not sure if someone will want to pay $2,300+ to most likely cover his reserve.
Obviously in a few days we will know.
I think the title should be changed to HOW TO BUY A PSA 10 AND FLIP IT
PSA is king!!
Wait the thread might be about the new buyer!
OH snap.
To be continued
Nicely done.

Buying a 1/1 of an average player for $2K plus, hoping to flip it is an extremely bad strategy
Way too much risk involved, namely if another is graded in the meantime making it a substantially devalued 1/2
I've seen it happen.
Seller got lucky. Or something else happened. Not making accusations, though.

Anywah, I'm off topic a bit and on a bit of a tangent
Who' going to get the one card that eluded Dmitri Young the 1/1 1981 Topps Fernando Valenzuela Rookie Stars?

<< <i>One thing I have learned during my brief time here is that a lot of people have the same feelings of uneasyness I do about the shadyness of certain things and it's too bad. The power these grading companies have to make rich people out of your average Joe is amazing and it's too bad. I want to invest but I also want to have fun and I want it to be on a level playing field....I have been disappointed and confused so many times by the cards I've gotten back, cards that I swear were a 9 or a 10 and are an 8, and then there are 10' and 9's I buy off eBay that I compare against my 8 or 9 and I scratch my head.

While it's nice to own a Gem Mint 10, and while it's nice to spend a certain amount of money on a card with some idea of how it stacks up against it's bretheren, the whole idea of submitting a card with the idea of it suddenly being worth thousands of dollars is a turn-off. I liked the idea of submitting my own cards so that I might have graded versions of less-than-popular cards, but I've become somewhat disillusioned for the very reasons you mentioned.
Compounding the issue is that I've been trying to pick up 70's hockey issues, and they're just not popular enough to where there's any consensus as to what does or does not affect grades. I've got PSA 9 OPC's with noticible stains on the front, yet I have other cards with print defect qualifiers that I can't spot. The relative roughness of an OPC cut is also something for which no uniform grading standard apparently applies.
So while I do like 8's, 9's and 10's, I've learned to not be bothered by my 7's and qualifiers by reminding myself that I didn't submit them with the idea of making $$$. The money craze killed the hobby for me back when I was a kid, and having money as an adult hasn't really changed that.
