DAY 1:
TrainNut and I attended the show yesterday after flying into Denver late Wednesday night. Well, actually, the airport is about halfway to Kansas and a $55 cab ride in. Other than that, I personally rate the facility and the local area as very good for a show. The convention center is huge, with many good restaurants and hotels of all price points close by.
TrainNut was paging, and his complaint was the convention center concession prices for really high, and their was too much competition from local Starbucks and foot places that has much better quality and a fraction of the concession prices. But, of much more value than paging tips, TrainNut got a good pep talk from Greg Bigham, a real benefit of the interesting people you meet at these events.
In all, a very enjoyable day, even tho the Penny Lady did not have any wine out!
The lack of an auction and show grading was kind of a disappointment. The show traffic seemed light, but all the dealer that I saw were ready to buy and sell. I took 21 coins (or 19 items, as one was a 38 Oregon PDS set) and sold or swapped 13 items, decided to keep one, leaving me with only 7 coins in my "sell/swap" box. While the stuff I sold did not feach moon money, I did not have to fire sale anything to make a deal.
I did buy a 1839 cent from Doug Bird, and picked up this very cool commem from CRO:
1923-S Monroe (Guttag)
The Monroe is the start of my early commem focus on collecting all the early issues, and ignoring the "dirty thirties" and later, except for the Spanish Train and Hudson.
DAY 2:
Before the show I read the USA today, and noted an article stating that a new Mayan calendar has been discoved beyond the previous end-of-the workd date of December 2012. We now have until sometime in the year 3500, so I felt pretty good about that news and decided it would make my day.
Before the show I attended the Liberty Seated Club meeting. It always amazes me that the attendance at these talks is so low, and the access to the real experts in the room is so near. They had a nice talk on the design changes from the no drapery to drapery coins...right up my alley on the 1839 set.
As for the show, I sold the last of my coins to sell except for three, and thenChris at Stacks convinced me to consign them to their Baltimore auction, so off they go! Maybe it was fate, but I bought a AU 1839 drapery half from our own Rich Ulrich. TrainNut went gaga over the 1799 draped bust dollar in his case in PCGS VF holder. I also bought some more counterstamps to go into my yet to be organized hoard, and another raw 51-O 3CS.
It seamed to be much busier today - at tleast their was more public in the bourse.
We had a late lunch at Sams3 today - two days in a row. The meatloaf sandwich is heckuva good protein overdose. I could only eat half, and took the other half to give away to one of the attendees sufferring from convention center food.
Afther the show, TrainNut and I wandred around the 16th ST Mall area, and checked out the Denver Union Station, finishing up at a gift show and buing a couple of metal parts funky wine holders for my better half.

Hard to believe there's no auction at a major show like this... going to lot viewing is half the fun at these big shows!!! Quite the buzzkill!!!!
Michael Kittle Rare Coins --- 1908-S Indian Head Cent Grading Set --- No. 1 1909 Mint Set --- Kittlecoins on Facebook --- Long Beach Table 448
I also found it hard to believe that no auction took plce either - and
the lack of the two top TPG's is a major surprise.
The Monroe is SUPER !! Nice pick up.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
New Barber Purchases
The Monroe looks awesome. CRO is right. Doesn't look like the 64's I've seen either.
<< <i>Thanks for the report. And you are right, the Denver airport is quite far from Denver! >>
It's also huge - larger than the island of Manhattan.
Denver ANA
5$ bills are WOW with the numbers - wanted:
02121809
04151865
Wanted - Flipper notes with the numbers 6-9 or 0-6-9 ON 1$ 2$ 5$ 10$ 20$
Wanted - 10$ Sereis 2013 - fancy Serial Numbers
That's a bit disappointing. I kind of thought that was one of her trademarks.
This is not good news for the doomsday prepper crowd.
