1934/1948 Assay Commission Medal Mule on eBay - NOT!

This listing on eBay is getting some serious bids:

1934/1948 Assay Medal Mule

The medal has no date on either side, not does it have the word "Assay" or Commission" anywhere. Yes that is the "design" of the obverse of the 1948 medal and the "design" of the reverse of the 1934 medal, BUT... the 1942 Assay Commision medal measured 57mm and the 1934 Assay commission medal measures 51mm. This tiny thing measures a paltry 33 mm! Neither of the Assay Commission Medal dies had anything to do with this creation, and it is actually nothing more than a small collectors piece made by the US mint, likely during Truman's Presidency. Not rare, not a mule , not big, not dated, not Assay , not Commission.

Whoever is the high bidder on this deserves to part with their money. And the seller sure misssed an important detail - diameter!

    Look at the pebbly surfaces.

I don't know medals, but to me, it looks like a Chinese Fake.

You're right! It's definitely not what the seller says it is.
I saw a Herbert Hoover medal, the same type as this with the philadelphia mint on the
reverse, go for a little over $10 a couple days ago.
Both sides of the auction might want to do a little research.

I won't defend the seller by any means, but it is known that there are some "Spurious midnight minter" examples of Assay Commission medals in private hands. I've seen several of them, and they are not likely to ever be officially documented. One of the bidders on this item is known to me, and he is a thorough and knowledgeable collector of the series.

Genuine Mint product, though not as described. I have seen similar. I suspect they were sold as souvenirs of mint visits, or perhaps given to visiting VIPs.

Again - those are not the Assay Commission mmedal dies. Too small. This is just a small collector piece like the Hoover one mentioned by the oher poster. Please tell your friend to take a closer look...No one who knows the series (and I have owned 90% of them including a 1950, 1955, and other rarities) would bid on it, considering the diameter. This is simply not an Assay Commision medal, period.
