Vending box question

When you purchase a vending box from say BBCE, is there any rhyme or reason to the cards you may receive? I understand it's 500 cards but are they all different or in some sequence or is it just a random group of 500? Any help is appreciated.

Typically, it is a series of Topps runs. Usually, there's a split so that you may have some duplicates. In the event of sheet runs, you'll usually get 3 of each (assuming a 132 card sheet). Topps ran several different variations of this over the years, but the norm on the modern issues is 1-2 (sometimes 3) of some players and 0-1 of others... There are sequences that are consistent just as they occur in wax, racks and cellos.
  • What year is it?

I know for example I had some 82 fleer vending, in boxes "1, 2, 3, and 4" you get 3 complete sets. I don't know how it works for other years since I haven't had many though.

Fleer vending (the early years) was a composite of boxes to make sets. They are NOTHING like Topps other than the fact that the boxes were sequenced.

With regard to the OP, the vending boxes from those years will yield 1-3 of a player and 0-1 of others. Doubtful that you'll get a complete set. I would avoid '78 vending like the plague. Experience suggests that they're terribly OC and encumbered with print defects.
  • What they said.

I have recently busted two of the 78 Topps Football vending boxes from BBCE. Some of the end cards were where most of the problems occured for me.

Centering can be all over the place wheather it wax, vending, etc... Many also complain about corners due to the packing. This being said the two boxes I got from BBCE yeilded some very nice cards indeed. Those boxes came from a fresh case that Steve Opened.
Yes I got some dogs(Mainly the first 10-20 cards on the ends) But I pulled just as nice of cards from those two vending boxes as I have the wax box I broke. Its hit and miss on the vending and maybe I hit. Centering is always a issue with any Topps product.
I was so happy with those vending boxes I bought 3 more that I have yet to opened.

I also broke a 81 Topps FB vending box from BBCE. I was real happy with the quality of cards I pulled from them as well.
The Montana Rookie I pulled graded a SGC 92 NM-MT+. Those boxes also come from a fresh case that Steve(BBCE) cracked open.

So while Vending can be a crap shoot at times, they can also yeild some gold at times. I think the KEY is getting good boxes from a freshly opened or well preserved case.
Stay away from the odd ball boxes that are usually beat-up.

Heck I got me a couple more of the 81 Topps FB Vending Boxes from BBCE as well that I have yet to open.

The general concensus that you will usually yeild better cards from wax, racks, cello is likely true in many cases. Again the Key to Vending Boxes is getting case fresh undamaged boxes in my experience and the price is right.

The 78 and 81 Topps Football Vending boxes Ive been getting from Steve(BBCE) have been very good to me. We will see if I can continue to beat the odds when I break the others I have.

I should have bought every one Steve(BBCE) had but I ran out of Money!

If you are eyeing the '81 Football vending I will tell you this:

I have bought 10 '81 vending boxes via Lynwood way over the last 2+ years (since I discovered BBCE).

Out of these 10 boxes I've pulled 5 Montana's, and there were never more than 1 per box. However, I've pulled either 13 or 14 Winslow rook's (at work, can't remember for sure). So if it hit right you could obviously double up on the Montana. To be honest, I keep buying them from time to time because I want to do just this, as I feel I'm due for the double image

Anyway, hope this helps, good luck with whatever you do.

My results from 78T football and basketball from BBCE have yielded many spider-creased cards. I've never pulled a 10 from either but have had several 8, 9s.....and many 5's. image

I hope you have better results. Mine was several years ago and were probably from a separate batch that he is now offering.

    Thanks,

I agree with Scott as well as what David said. Vending is the worst IMHO if you are looking to grade.
