1821 Bust Quarter: Do I sell the coin like this on eBay??

halfcentmanhalfcentman Posts: 1,498 ✭✭✭
Really nice (at least I think it is) 1821 Large Capped Bust Quarter as you can see with a CAC Sticker, with one problem not related to the coin:

Should I go through the process of reholdering it before I list it, or is it not worth the expense?

looks too deep to buff out, so yes, absolutely. Reholder it. Turns bidders off to see any defects whatsoever. You will make your money back on the reholder and then some.

Scratch is too deep and too long over the surface of the coin. Reholder.

It will look better after some serious polishing but I don't think it will ever be entirely removed.

No harm trying, if reholdering is the only alternative.

What's the cost of a reholder?
  • SeattleSlammerSeattleSlammer Posts: 10,020 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just subtract $30 from your BIN price and call it good. Just be sure to also reference the scratch in your description.

Actually you need to add $8.00 and shipping both ways to that.

Bingo! May not cost that much TO them, depending how you send it, but you know it will be ~$17 shipping back to you...plus however long it takes to get done there (I've only done 1 reholder and that still took a few weeks...grading right now has 2 of mine in (modern and economy) since 4/5/12 and no update yet, so there are delays).

Depending on the price it may bring, what the obverse looks like, and how long you want to wait, would help me, if I were you, determine my next steps.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

And you also lose the CAC bean so you have to send it back to CAC and risk losing the bean. To much risk, polish it as best you can and sell it as is.

You would not lose the bean, as CAC has a record of the holder number and will re-bean it. You would need to pay for the cost of shipping & insurance to/from CAC, however.

Carefully peel off the sticker and put it back on the new holder. I've done it.

But my first suggestion is PlastX and a little effort polishing.

To get the most from your coin, have it reholdered and rebeaned. Shortcuts will take away from your final winning bid.

It seems clear some people like the plastic and glue more than the coin. Take my advice and get rid of the whole thing, AS IS.
Why waste another dime ? Hurry to the exit.

Yes, $10 to re-holder, $8 fee, $17 to ship it back, and $12 to ship it (more or less) is not worth it.

However, I am going to re-holder it since I have a good picture of the coin and CAC will sticker it back.

I am going to give it to someone who lives right near PCGS. That way I will not have to ship it to PCGS, and they can ship it back to me for a lot less than $17.00. Of course I thought about this prior to posting the thread.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

    Yes, do all that.

then I'll win your auction and crack it back out for my raw quarter set. BTW, Can I see the obverse?

    thanks
