Autographs by mail- need resources/info. on players/methods

Sorry, dug on the site and couldn't find much help on this topic. The Autograph thread is basically non-existent as well.

I am looking to get autographs on particular cards from players who are now all retired. The cards I want the autographs on are not very common and hardly come up on eBay. I don't travel much, so personal signings are out the window. Did some research on-line on the subject and a few of the players, but wanted to start here. Feel free to give any information that would help.

Players looking to do by mail:

Will Clark
Ruben Sierra
Jose Canseco
Bo Jackson
Eric Davis
Darryl Strawberry
Roger Clemens
Don Mattingly
Mark McGwire
Mike Greenwell
Ken Griffey Jr.
Nolan Ryan
David Justice
Robin Yount
Frank Thomas
Cal Ripken Jr.

If anyone has had success by mail with any of these guys, I'd love to know!!! Thanks................

Nolan Ryan has his own foundation and charges around 35 bucks for the autograph. I would Google his name and foundation for information.

Someone just had a private signing here on the boards with Canseco. I would search on his name and you will find the contact information.

My understanding is the others are tough gets and usually your only option is to look for signings at larger card shows that do mail order.
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

This is the best site for the information you are looking for.

    Sports Collectors Net

Cost $15 for a year to join, but WELL worth it. People post successes, failures, private signings and addresses. And you can search each of those names and get an idea of how
others have done sending to those guys.

I would say by looking at your list your going to need to pay for private signings to get most of them.
    Looking for Carl Willey items.

    Thanks for the help guys!!!

My list is based off a particular card set that I "specialize" in, so it will indeed be hard to put together with a lot of HOF'ers. I'm willing to pay for autos if needed and, yes, the waiting will suck!!! Ted, I checked out SportsCollectorsNet and it looks like a really good resource. Thanks for the recommendation, the $15.00 fee definitely looks worth it.

If you send blind TTMs to any of the players on your list you'll be wasting postage. If they sign for charity, that would be a better bet.

If money is not a big consideration, most of those guys do private signings and shows now and then. I think Davis and Strawberry are going to be at the National but the rates are usually sky high.

Another thing you can try is to make a contact with someone who goes to Spring Training for autographs, SportsCollectors.net would be a good resource for that.

You might think I'm crazy to suggest this, but eBay might be your best bet. Although there are probably more fakes for sale on eBay than real autographs, there are a lot of "good" autographs that fall through the cracks because people are scared off. If you're interested in something you can post a link to the auction here, there are several of us who like to play the real/not real game.

  • I got Clemens TTM recently.

The card I sent came back unsigned, but with it was a signed 5x7 color photo, along with a letter about how Roger doesn't have the time to honor indiviual requests. (I wonder why?)
It appears to be a real signature, and not autopen. It came back very quickly, 8 days. I stated in my letter that I am a Yankee fan, but the pic I got back of Roger was in an Astros uniform.
Still not bad for 2 stamps. Below is the addy I used. Good Luck!

@Moose, appreciate the advice........I'm sure most would be un-successful so I will join the SportCollectorsNet and start there. I was hoping to pick off a few easier ones by mail, I saw some success stories with Will Clark's home address. As for Nationals, I won't be able to go, but would it be an option to hook up with someone on the Board and see if they would get sigs for me??? I saw three players on my list that are supposed to be at Nationals. As for eBay, yes, I have had a little luck with that over the last two years. I've seen about five of my specific cards come up over that time, got a couple of them (Dwight Gooden/Ronnie Lott) and they look legit. I may take you up on the offer to review a signature. I'm looking at a signed Sandberg listed on an "autograph" website. They want $30.00 for it, so I would check with you guys first.

@Mattingly, thanks much for the address!! Even if I was able to get a signed 5x7, that would be cool. Really fast turnaround time as well. Since you are a Mattingly guy, do you know what are the best chances for getting him to sign????

    Thanks again for the help........

Ripken does private signings through his memorabilia company (IronClad Authentics) a few times a year, so you may want to Google that as well for more information

To be honest I've never sent him a request. I'm also new to TTM autos. I'm not yet a member of any web site dedicated to it. I have read of some successful returns online, but I don't have any idea what his overall success rate is. I would mail something to him via the Dodgers. It would get to him fastest that way, so that may be your best bet as far as a freebie is concerned. You may not ever get it back but it's worth a shot for 2 stamps.

While were on the topic of TTM.....Does anyone have a good address for Sy Berger? I've heard he is a good TTMer, and I'd like to send him a 1984 Topps Mattingly RC to sign for me. Also does he require a donation?

    Thanks!
