New Mercury Dime R7 Variety - Competitor For Top Pop As Well Maybe? - Raw

keyman64keyman64 Posts: 15,507 ✭✭✭✭✭
This is a tough coin. In fact, out of all the varieties for fcloud(Tony) to find, this coin was the last one for him. There are 4 examples graded by PCGS. DIMEMAN has a raw MS64-ish example. An EF40 ANACS just sold on eBay. And now I have this fine example. The finest graded at PCGS in MS63. This example seems to be within that realm. A special thanks goes out to the one and only DIMEMAN for pointing me in the right direction so that I could obtain this.

On the obverse, this coin has a die crack from the rim at 6:30 up and through the neck. On the reverse, my example has heavy die polish lines through "STATES". The secondary "S" is evident south of primary "S". As noted in the Cherrypickers' Guide, there is minor strike doubling evident on the north side of the primary mintmark.

I am only really looking for 6 more varieties in Mint State, preferrably FB...but I am always looking for upgrades. There are 30 Varieties Recognized in the PCGS Merc Variety Set. Still needed are:
1934-D/D FS-501
1941 DDO FS-101
1942-Inverted S FS-501
1945 DDO FS-101
1945-D/D FS-506
1945-S/S FS-503

Looks like a nice coin Greg.

The AU53 in my set will be for sale as soon as I get my MS coin graded and in the variety holder.

Jesbroken - your 35-S may be a rpm2 but it is not the rpm1 that is in this thread.

Thanks Dimeman, but where do you find any information on an RPM 2, I checked both the latest CPG and
    Coneca's website. Are there others?
    Thanks for your help.

I'll look it up when I get home...just in case it is in the Treasure Hunting Mercury Dimes book from 2005 by Wexler and Flynn.

Sorry, I have been away for a while.

I looked at my RPM2, which was attributed by Bill Fivaz, and the repunching of the MM looks the same as the jesbroken coin but the placement of the MM to the leaf looks a little different. Sorry I don't have a pic and I don't think there is a pic anywhere unless in the book Greg mentioned, which I do not have. I guess I need to get that book.

We will have to see what Greg finds out we he gets home from the game.

As DIMEMAN said, that looks like the RPM-002. A photo of it is shown in the Treasure Hunting Mercury Dimes Book by John A. Wexler and Kevin Flynn from 2005.........however, the placement of the MM in Jim's example is DIFFERENT! The mintmark in the book and I am guessing DIMEMAN'S example show a mm that is much higher and a little more to the right.

You should send yours to CONECA (Variety Vista)...or you could just skip all of that and send it to me. I would be happy to take it off your hands.

Thanks to everyone else for the comments. The RAYS game was fun but they lost to the pesky A's in the 12th freaking inning. Oh well. The RAYS still have the best record in baseball right now...we'll see how long that lasts. Hopefully the RAYS can pull out a win vs. the A's when they play them again in 13 hours.

Thanks Greg and dimeman and tony for your help. I will purchase the book this coming week. I have bought many books
from Rick(mostly Indians, imagine that). I read the material on the Coneca website regarding sending coins to Dr. Wiles, but
wonder about whether I can just have him attribute the coin or do I have to let him send it to ANACS and have it entombed in the
yellow death they are currently calling a holder. I have intentions on having my complete collection placed in PCGS holders within the next
year and do not wish to have another anacs holder(I have one given me by a forum member).
Again, thanks for all your help, that is the intent of the management, I feel, but seems to get sidetracked, lately, in all the
    off numismatic trivial issues presented.

Jim, no need for ANACS to be involved. Dr. Wiles will just write up his professional opinion and send the coin back to you. That's it. Let us know what he says. image

About the book. It was written in 2005 so it does not have everything in it since a few varieties have been located since then but BOY IS THE BOOK AN EYE OPENER. I love it!
