He wanted to use it to practice fielding grounders with, or destroy it?

still WINNING!
Anyone ever read Don Dellilo's Underworld? Fiction that revolves around what happened to Bobby Thompson's "Shot heard 'round the world" baseball (it was never found btw) in 1951. Cool basis for a book. Longish book worth the read in my mind, but at least read the prologue if you haven't. Book departs from baseball quite a bit.
The Texas Rangers cap Jose Canseco was wearing in 1993 when a ball hit by Cleveland Indian Carlos Martinez bounced off Canseco’s head and then over the outfield wall for an assisted homer brought in $11,950.
<< <i>I always wonder why the Mets don't ever buy this ball when it's come up for bid. Would look great in their Hall of Fame. >>
Between Bernie Madoff and deferred payments to Bobby Bonilla, it's a wonder the Mets are able to cough up enough cash for an adequate supply of unused baseballs at home games.
