Mariano Rivera torn his ACL, career might be over

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/04/sports/baseball/yankees-mariano-rivera-injured-during-batting-practice.html
<< <i>Rivera, 42, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while chasing a fly ball during batting practice before the Yankees’ 4-3 loss to the Royals. As he ran toward the center-field wall, his knee buckled and he crashed into the wall, then fell to the warning-track dirt, clutching his right knee as he grimaced in pain.
Rivera was taken to Kansas University MedWest hospital for a magnetic resonance imaging test. The Royals’ team physician, Dr. Vincent Key, provided a diagnosis of the torn A.C.L., which almost certainly means Rivera has thrown the last pitch of his season, if not his career.
An emotional Rivera said through tears after the game that he had let the team down. When asked if he thought he would come back to pitch again, he was uncertain.
“At this point I don’t know, I don’t know, we have to face this first,” he said, then after a pause to collect himself, he added: “It all depends how the rehab is going to happen. From there, we’ll see.” >>
Hope he can recover soon, and go out on his own terms

Minus Jeter I agree!
As a Yankee fan, the video of him getting injured was quite disturbing to say the least. I only hope that he can recover enough to end his career on a better note.
They call me "Pack the Ripper"
<< <i>Mariano is no a doubt 1st ballot HOFer, a 5 time world champ, and has played on some of the greatest teams of all time. He will no doubt go down as one of the greatest Yankees of all time and his jersey number will surely be retired. Surprisingly, his rookie card is still affordable in PSA 10. That may end very soon.

his jersey number is already retired
<< <i>Love or hate the Yankees, Mariano Rivera, and Derek Jeter for that matter, have been class acts for the game of baseball. >>
+1 about the only two left. Class acts that is.
<< <i>his jersey number is already retired
Yep, the last of the 42's. Oddly enough he's retiring at 42. I bet the Yankees still make a pinstriped version of his retired number though.
<< <i>At 42 years old, I believe his career is over.

Jamie Moyer came back from Tommy John surgery at age 49. If Mo wants to come back, he'll come back. I think he will.

Actually, there have been "closers" in baseball for way longer than that. Granted, the number of innings they've been asked to pitch has been drastically reduced though. Either way, Mo was the best. I hope he can come back.

Without a doubt he'll get a plaque in Monument Park, and his number will be retired as a Yankee......even though it alredy is.....
IMO one day he'll get his monument too. For some reason the Yanks only give them out posthumously. The only players that have one so far are the big 4.....Gehrig, Ruth, Mantle, DiMaggio
Miller Huggins has one as a manager, and there is one for the victims of 9/11. Steinbrenner has one but it's a little different from the others.

That's interesting. I've never been to Yankee Stadium but I'm surprised by only 4 monuments. I would have expected Yogi to have one. How many plaques are up? It must be a lot.
edited to add: Oh, I see now why Yogi wouldn't have one. I'm sure he's pretty happy about that.
<< <i>Very cool. Thanks. Do you think Yogi Berra will get a statue? >>
I certainly think Yogi is deserving.
Mo says he's going to try and come back

Well, there was Luis Arroyo with 29 saves in 1961, Firpo Marberry with 22 in 1926, and so on so....
No, not "like the past 30 years".
