1881 S Morgan pawn shop find

Hello all, first post...

I picked up this Morgan at a local pawn for $23 the other day and I'm curious if you think it's worth submitting for grading? I don't have a clue. Thanks

First of all, image to the learning class of coins! Nice choice in coins. I don't think you should submit. My opinion, get somemore opinions. Looks cleaned. Could be wrong, though.imageimage

it's too hard to tell from those photos. if you believe it's 65 or higher, it would be worth it. $23 is a good deal though...but it's not worth submitting, in my opinion, unless it's a super high grade. i'd spend a couple bucks to put it in a intercept shield holder instead.

    Hello and VELKOMMEN!!

With so many low grade slabbed 1881-s Morgans out there, IMO it makes little sense to add another to the fold unless it is a scarce VAM or ms66 or better.

Looks real clean but tough to tell if it's gradable from those pics.

My suggestion is to enjoy it raw for many years.

Looks like a nice coin with clean fields. Hard to gauge luster given what look like scans rather than photos.
Like others have suggested, your money might be better spent on pawn shop coins rather than grading at this point.
If you find something that makes nice price jumps in the grades and is less common then go for the grading.
Looks like you got a great deal on this one! Keep up the good work!

  • Thanks for all of the responses, I'll take your collective advice and keep it ungraded for now and continue hunting for deals at the local shops. BTW how do you upload pictures directly into the thread instead of attachments?

if your purpose is to find undergraded underpriced Morgans in pawn shops
you must know how to grade well
    and when to submit.

otherwise, you may be wasting your time.

  • Buying under-graded coins is definitely not my goal at the pawn shops. This particular shop will usually sell me old U.S. silver at spot and the Morgan just happened to be in the pile.

scanners are rough on the lighting aspects.

got a cell phone to image it with?

(or point-and-shoot with a macro function?)

instead of hitting "Reply" hit "Quote" on my picture post.

it will show you the "mark up language" needed to post a picture.

then you will also need a place to host the picture, like a personal web space, or photobucket, etc.

If I,m not mistaken the `81 S comes in nice high grades so, unless you know you have a 65 ,or better
its a waste of time and money submitting any lesser one.

Wouldn't looking for varieties and the like be a better goal in types of these venues if you are going to frequent them?

    Just a thought.

    Best wishes, and good hunting,

    Eric
