Am I that lucky... or is PWCC just that good???

I won this from probstein, whom I consider highly respected and on par with PWCC, and felt I got a steal at roughly $50 below VCP at the time...
Auction Link (probstein)
In the interest of seeing how lucky I got, I've had this in my watchlist, ends in a couple hours....
Auction Link (PWCC)
L/R centering is the same and this one has a more noticably dinged corner, granted the T/B centering is basically better at 50/50... but nearly $300 better???
WOW

Certainly not saying that one isn't a better 8... but roughly $300 better?
Or $200 better than current VCP average... or $100 better than the highest sale price listed on VCP in the past 6 years?
Agreed, the PWCC card looks better. $200 better? Looking at the scan and grade, if it was for my PC, I'd do it.
Thanks,

I personally think that Brent/PWCC presents his auctions better than anybody in the industry. He's got the best scans, outstanding descriptions, and a very large following.
I've used both Rick and Brent and have had great success with both. Based on my experience, I send any cards that are high-end for the grade to Brent due to the quality
of his scans. Very rarely do I have a downside surprise with Brent and I've had many cards sell for more than double VCP.
Last summer, I sent Brent about 200 cards due to, as Matt calls it, change of focus disease. I remember 2 cards distinctly due to what he fetched for them
He sold a '59 Banks PSA 8 of mine for $334. VCP is $160. And a '56 SGC 9 Mantle for $8,500, which I paid $5,100 for. I was blown away by both.
I haven't checked recently, but the $334 might be the highest recorded price for a Banks.
6/8/11 eBay Image prewarcardcollector t***h 17 $334.56
6/7/11 eBay Image prewarcardcollector s***r 36 $8,460.00
Both are incredibly professional. I've never met Brent in person, but I've spent some time with Mr. Probstein. I'll never know 1/10th of what Rick knows about
Baseball cards, let alone other sportcards. Just my 7 cents
Maybe a snipe battle at the end.
Both sellers are outstanding.
I have problem with PWCC's charges, but it goes to show you that selling to the "little guy" is sometimes harder than selling to the big fish.
Also wasn't there a thread here recently about them?
No disrespect; but I will give you the answer as to why he can charge basically whatever he wants. When folks are bidding on high end cards....they don't care about the shipping charges. He sells endless high end cards...so only serious buyers go to him. Serious buyers don't care about shipping. Don't get me wrong...I look at shipping; but it will not sway the purchase of a high end cards.

I suggest an eye exam in your near future.
The scans are not the same size. Of course one will show more defects.

+1
from my experiences 1962 Topps Football don't sell as well when they have PD issues...
the white circles on the black are a buzz killer....

<< <i>Bobby....take the eye exam to the back of the current card and view the inch long paper wrinkle.
And where are you seeing that??
<< <i>On the back. It starts on the T. C. G. and goes at an angle. >>
That was the one thing I saw before I asked but couldn't really make it out as a wrinkle. Looks like a discoloration in the cardboard. Your earlier post made it sound like this is a common problem for the '62 set? I don't collect that year and haven't looked at enough of them to make that judgement.
I'd pay more for a card that fills its holder over one that doesn't. That's just me.

Both these guys sell a lot of cards and Im sure both are fine upstanding gentleman. But I personally stay away from the inflated prices.
Both present the cards well and their reputations and volume attract much attention, which is the name of the game when selling.
That being said the scans are nice, but I believe the scans I provide are every bit as nice as either. I think the biggest part is that buyers TRUST both the sellers and are willing to bid a bit more to do business there. That is their decission to do so, But I find plenty of cards just as nice from the handful small sellers I tend to deal with without having to pay the inflated cost and shipping.
Its all Good!

The comment wasn't about PWCC's prices as much as the cheapskates that buy the raw singles I sell from case breaks. The money the singles bring in isn't much, but I don't have enough space to keep them.
I probably even bid on that first one.
The PWCC Starr looks cleaner with darker borders and a clearer image.
The better scans do make a huge difference at times.
It's really not a knock on Rick Probstein at all here either, he taking in
consignments to list, just as PWCC is too. The quality of the consignment
is up to the consignor. Some guys are using both sellers to unload extra cards, or break
sets, or weed out some weaker looking cards at times. It's all part of the
consignment landscape.
I agree with BigRedDog, there's better deals to be had from smaller sellers on ebay.
Here's my own Starr card, which I like a lot.
Completely agree with the scan quality. Don't think that he needs consignments. Look how much he has
grown his business, just on reputation. Part of my morning routine is to look to see what Rick has listed in
the previous 24 hours
<< <i>Pwcc card is far superior IMO. >>
I think the Probstein card is before the half grades and may have got the benefit of the doubt and got the "up grade".

in full size -- it seems that eBay shrinks down the size.
1. left click on the image from the card's auction page (this
will open a popup with an image of the card)
2. right click on the image and select "view image" (I am using
Mozilla Firefox as a browser, with the Bazzaduca extension, fwiw)
3. that should allow you to view the image, full size, in the browser window.
Using this method ^^^, Probie's scans are comparable to PWCC
in size and detail.
Here's a scan from a current Probstein auction... notice it is quite hi-res.
