Question about 1860's seated halves

Lately I've been on a mission to gather some nice circulated PCGS examples in VF-30 or higher. So far, I've managed to get dates like the 1860, 1861, 1863, 1863-S, 1866-S and 1867-S with that nice crusty look and fairly close or a little above PCGS price guide for those grades. Year ago, I managed to get both the 1860-S and 1861-O in PCGS AU-58. Lately I've seen some of these dates with very high Buy it Now prices on Ebay, of course that doesn't mean that's a 'real' value. My question is are the 1860's dates really that hard to find nice? Are the price guides due for an adjustment maybe? Just curious what the experts have to say on this.

Coins with original skin, good eye appeal and that are accurately graded are much tougher in the EF through AU range than Greysheet would suggest. While auction data is a nice addition to the Greysheet, one must be able to see the auction lot to determine what the coin looks like before going by the prices realized as an accurate determination of value.

I'll say I have never been able to get a PCGS graded XF/AU Seated half for PCGS price guide let alone the war years coins.

From what I have seen on ebay, collectors corner and teletrade(just to name a few), while junk low quality coins have little market for the last year, XF up circulated coins with original skins(especially holdered) have enjoyed a
slight increase in value---well higher than what the price guides say. JMO

I bought a 61 in PCGS XF and a 63-S in PCGS VF35...neither of them were close to guide. Doesn't bother me a bit. image

I think a lot of original skinned circulated seated halves are undervalued. You have to pay for quality.

I have an 1862 raw with original skin (reasonable graded about EF 45) buried somewhere that I bought for 90.00 about 25 years ago and still stapled into the 2x2. I remember thinking that it was pretty tough to find all those years ago. Price guides? Forget them, even without slab I wouldn't take twice guide. The '64 philly in similar grade fairly tough as well...
