Canadian Newp!

Posted about this one earlier when it was first offered to me, and I just pulled the trigger. An exciting buy (my 2nd most valuable coin owned to date), but just looking at it leaves me wondering if we as coin collectors are daft for paying insane multiples over face value for certain coins...

    Thanks guys.

Also, no PST or GST on this one. Lined up this purchase with a private collector image

May I ask what is meant by "Detached Jewel?"

This is a very rare variety that is only found on I believe one obverse die. The diagnostic used to be that the last jewel on the queen's crown was "detached" from the rest of it (see pic #2). But recently a couple pieces have been found where the jewel is still (just barely) attached. The sure fire way to ID this variety is by the amount of beads and their size/alignment to the "II". There's approximately 40 large beads nickels graded across ICCS/PCGS/NGC. Two of them are "Large beads, Attached Jewel" with the remainer being "Large Beads, Detached Jewel".

    Here's a webpage that explains:

I have rolls of canadian nickles some guy traded me for silver a few years ago. I haven't even looked at any of them I'll have to haul them out of storage and look through them.

I picked up the new canadian hardcover coins and tokens book but I didn't study it in detail yet.

PMD, thank you for the answer. I have just recently gotten into "The Darkside" of coins thanks to Lord M. He sold me a Churchill Crown and now I am working on the 3 coin registry for Elizabeth II Crowns. It is harder than one would think. Very few coins graded.

Beautiful Canadian Nickel you have there and love the slab.
