Just got a call from the Detective... they found our burglar... and our stuff!!

April 1, 2012 we were burglarized. We posted the video of the man's face on youtube, and facebook.
Well just got a call from the detective, and he says the man's attorney called and would like to return the stolen merchandise, and pay for the damages done during the break in.
So we are waiting to see if/when we get our stuff back.
A big thank you to everyone who helped. Our local Police, Washington State, Oregon State, as well as others. (this guy had warrants everywhere).
Thanks to anyone out there that viewed the video and helped ID the guy.
Score one for the good guys.

Glad you were able to catch the thief.

im sure after his "willingness to comply and pay for damage" he will just get a slap on the wrist and be right back out on the street...

Is the lawyer offering back all the merchandize and breakin damage to drop charges? I hope not.

  • You have several options. You may want to speak with a lawyer yourself to find out what they all are. You could ask for money to compensate you for the toll this has taken on you and your family. I would not just "let bygones be bygones" as we may all want to be forgiving and kind people, there needs to be a lesson in this for the next robber and thievery victim.

Great news! See if you can trade some of the cost of the repairs for having a few of his knuckles hammered.

That is great. A rare thing. Suggestion to talk to a lawyer may be a good thing, with such a odd request from a burglars lawyer. Ask your lawyer also about your own self protection view of it, esp since the burgler has multiple warrants, which means he is no angel, and will be out and about again. We all want to see this sort of thing stop of course, but you are a just a citizen, not the justice system, so think self protection in all your decisions. Be happy to get your coins back, and have as little direct engagement with the other parties as possible, and never with the burglar. How this occurred I don' t know, but change those circumstances.

He was a thief. I doubt you could recoup much of anything besides your stolen goods. He probably has nothing else.

    Great news.

I think it would be a good thing if when someone is caught stealing at a show, rather than just let the police catch-and-release them, someone should take a video or picture of the criminal and pass around, post it here and distribute it at future shows.

You could add a narrative. With a real stupid voice singing "I'm sittin' on a baby bumble B, ... won't my mommy be so proud of me ? ".

And then show a close up of a Susan B Anthony dollar.
  • Thanks for all the good advice.... keep it coming.
I'm not an attorney (but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night)

Here's the story from our detective.
Attorney called and said that he represented the guy in question.
Police have ID'd him as Fletcher with about 10 first names.
Attorney said, "it wasn't Mr. Fletcher, it was a friend of his, that he was supposed to meet."
And he said, "the friend didn't show up, so Mr. Fletcher left, and it was the friend who robbed the place."

Ok, so our detectives wanted ALL the raw footage from all of our cameras... 16 cameras with 24/7, audio and video.
Large video files. They want to show that Mr. Fletcher was the one that came up to the shop, and showed his face (video 3).
And that the burglar is the same fellow, please see video 1 and 2.

Now all you detectives out there, please watch the videos carefully, you guys will probably find things that can "sure up" this investigation.
You can see the same clothes, and other features... but see if you guys can make this case solid.

    Thanks in advance.

Today's technology is fascinating, actually. Remember a few short years ago ? Nobody would have heard about this for weeks or perhaps never. Now it's across the wire within hours.

  • For cheap legal advice you could join "Pre-paid legal" for around $40 a month with many hours of consultation help for business and personal use without additional charges. It's an MLM, unfortunately, there are apparently alternatives. In my experience, a lawyer will give you some time free, and then try to get you into a contract. There are lawyers at www.quatloos.com an anti-fraud site, that could give solid advice. Gary North has an advice site, ask all the questions you want and get answers--first month gets refunded if you don't care for it.

Talking to the detectives on the case may be useful as to options--whether you want to press charges or not. As to the risk of physical harm to you if you press charges because the guy is a dangerous criminal potentially--this just sounds like bullying! "Don't do the right thing because he might really get dangerous."

There are many coin dealers who have gotten ripped off, their shops broken into, their merchandise sold for drugs or whatever. Very infrequently do they catch the perpetrators. There are reports from time to time of them nailing the perpetrators who often run in packs and are organized.

Don't let yourself be intimidated by what "might" happen.

Great news but it isn't over until the burglar is tried, sentenced, and put in prison and all coins are returned to their rightful owners.

Absolutely. And the show operators should get clarification from the local police as to whether the person has to leave the coin show with the stolen goods, or just leave that table from which the goods were stolen.

And on the rare case where a vest pocket dealer may actually steal from a dealer who gives him/her undeserved trust, what should be the right procedure? In my case the show manager blamed me for being "too loose" instead of asking who it was and following up with proper law enforcement procedure. Electronic surveillance is becoming cheaper and smaller; every show should have some units installed inside the bourse for follow-ups on stolen good reports!
  • Just got my "victim pack" from our prosecuting attorney. With Keith Fletcher named as the crook.
State of Idaho vs. Keith Fletcher.
So maybe the prosecuting attorney isn't buying the "friend" story.
We'll see how this goes, should be cheap entertainment at the least.

  • Well, here's the update.
The guy might be a burglar, but he is a wonderful driver.
He has still not been caught, if only he would make a "calif. stop", or speed just a little, so he'd get pulled over, and FOUND.
    Will let you know....

  • Why don't you edit and upload the actual footage itself to YouTube? The one I watched was a cellphone camera shot of someone watching the footage on a computer monitor or something.
  • Sorry, not tech savy enough.
Our video system is in a weird format, and I couldn't find a converter.
So I just played it, and caught it with my iphone.

    Update..... still nobody in custody.

It is good that the burglar apparently still has your coins. Not likely that he will be allowed to pay for damages since the repairs would be funded by thefts from others and thus would be impounded. Good luck, Jerry
