I have a 1975 Topps Dan Fouts RC that is PSA 9 and flawless

Sometimes it seems to arbirtrary. I swear sometimes I don't get what the difference between a 9 and a 10 is. I have examined this card every which way and can't find a thing wrong

  • As you already know, it's based on many attributes and it is possible on a good day it'll pull a 10. We all have our own idea of what a 10 is or what flawless is. Post a scan and you'll get our opinion. Maybe send it in for a review for kicks? Oh, and welcome to the boards!

It would be cool if PSA offered a service where for a small surcharge they will give you a few words on why your card received x grade and whats holding it back from the next grade. They would have gotten hundreds of my dollars already.

Like place a checkbox on the form and you'd pay an extra $1 per card to know why they said NO 10 FOR YOU

If the card is worth enough, you can go the route of cracking -> submit -> receive -> crack -> submit and on and on until you get what you want.

In my experience the difference between a 9 and a 10 is often something typically overlooked such as centering that is not perfect or surface gloss and/or registration.

What Grote said. Centering is usually the achilles heel. Measure the Fouts up front and back. If the front is worse than 55-45 or the back is worse 75-25, don't count on a 10. 55-45 is almost perfect centering. You'd be surprised how little offset that allows for. Cards that look perfectly centered to my naked eye are sometimes worse than 55-45 when I measure it.

Can't figure out how to show the image or else I would show it

Centering not a problem...ALl my other PSA 9's I think I can find a minor flaw that makes it a 9, but not this one. Centering is beautiful

congrats on the 9... just remember humans make the call so they can be wrong either way. You are only paying for an opinion - if the card is for you collection who cares... if you are trying to sell that's another story.

Send it in for a review sub and it will come back with post it notes showing why they graded it that way.

I don't believe that PSA does the post it notes anymore for review subs. They haven't the last couple of times on mine.

I really wish that PSA would print subgrades on the flip.

Check for micro print snow on the front. The Fouts RC is notorious
for having subtle amounts of snow. Let's see a large scan of the card
    in question....

Spot on. I have a nice 8...a little oc t/b, but could likely squeeze a 9 for that, but add the show, and its an 8, as it should be. The card photo itself if not very focused, so a little snow doesn't bother me.

I have bought and sold 1000s of graded cards and I don't know how anyone can honestly say, this should be a 10 and claim something is flawless in a slab. You can't really see the edges in the case, and you can't see the surface at all. You can say this is centered very well and the corners are sharp, but I think most would agree, grading covers, or should cover in some cases, more then corners and centering.

Can someone tell me how to post an image? I have it scanned and in my folder ready to sell in eBay, but no URL... the format on this forum is a little different on this message board. How do I put the scan in my post?

I've actually sent a bunch of cards to PSA and get really disappointing results. I own enough 9's, 10's and 8's, where I think I get a feel for what I'll get back...I've sent a bunck of 86-87 Fleer Basketball cards that I said to myself "you know, this MIGHT be a 10, but I know it's at least a 9".... and I get an 8. Sometimes I wonder if they're keeping the card grades lower and lower to make the 9's and 10's that much more valuable and make PSA high grade cards that much more desirable? (It's good for business kind of thing...)
