How do you solve a problem like Beckett?

PSA has chosen to use Beckett's definition of what count as rookie cards.

Unfortunately, for people who collect cards of international sports like tennis, golf, soccer, or boxing, Beckett specifically excludes tobacco cards and any card produced/sold outside the U.S. and Canada from being considered as a rookie card.

So if you want a rookie set of HOFers from one of these sports, the cards produced in their home countries, where they played, don't count! Instead, you may end up with a card produced decades after retirement even if they had widely collected (and sometimes pack-issued) cards during their careers.

Some of these sports don't have rookie card sets, and for tennis, the set is a disaster - Maureen Connolly's "rookie card" was issued in 1991, 22 years after her death, while almost 2/3 of the players in the International Tennis Hall of Fame who have cards have NO rookie cards according to Beckett.

Is there any other published listing of rookie cards that we could try to convince PSA to use for the sports where Beckett's rules make no sense?

Or should we focus on trying to get Beckett to adopt sensible rules for international sports?

Thats the same for some Hk and BK cards. Eurpoeans have older cards that on the registry.

My suggestion is a lousy one.

wear a FB helmet when you bang you head against the wall.......as I doubt either those companies will move an inch.

  • Generally speaking, PSA has no real hobby people below the top tier of mgmt. PSA has been subject to Becketts publishing mistakes for years, and in a way it's good to have a separation between what they do (grading and authentication) and the hobby market itself. Ignorance is bliss.
Any team on any given Sunday, can beat any other team...unless they were playing the Miami Dolphins in 1972.
