World Coins Made by the U.S. Mint 1793-2000

I enjoyed reading the article by BJ Searls on the many coin issues produced for foreign countries by the U.S. Mint. (Kudos BJ!) I knew the Mint had made many issues for Australia, Costa Rica, Cuba, and the Philippines but didn't know that PCGS actually has a Registry Set of those coins. I see only one small set in that category. Perhaps a new collecting challenge ... hmmm ... although some of the coins from Cuba are really rare. I haven't researched many of the others.

Comments from ye World Coin folks? (Sorry, it's not Darkside to me).

Here's ye Article Linkie

and here's ye PCGS Registry Set Composition

Enjoy!

Best Regards,

George

I notice the Set Composition gives a whopping 9 points to the 1969 Canada dime. I wonder if this is only the very rare Large Ship/Large Date or does the Small Ship/Date qualify as well. I think the Philadelphia Mint made both but not sure. The Small Date at any rate is quite common, far as I know. What am I missing here?

    Canadian experts, what say ye?

Very cool. Just by chance, in my World Type Set, I have 7 of the coins listed.

As for the 1969 Canada dime, I'd presume it is the Large Date variety. There is speculation that this coin was minted in Philadelphia, I guess maybe that has been confirmed. As far as I know, the Small Date variety was minted back in Canada.

I wondered if anybody else has considered starting/started this massive set since the PCGS article and this thread appeared? What are you going after first? (Just Having Fun's nice Philippine coins on TT come to mind in this context.)

Some of the coins, the plastic is worth about as much as the coin ... but there are also a lot of rarities in this set. The Cuban gold, the Philippine rarities, much more.

I would argue that some of the coins (US Philippines 1903-1945, Hawaii 1883 series) should not be in the set, as those places were US territories rather than "foreign countries" at the time of coinage.

I've been thinking about putting a set like this together and have an old booklet (I think its from the 1960s but I have to check) that lists the ones up to that date. I do have a few pieces here and there but nothing organized (and in fact I just sold two Australian shillings struck at the San Francisco Mint, so I' m not too serious about it). Personally I think it's a very exciting set to work on and one of the true "worldwide" sets that can be completed.

I do have to add that there are some very tough issues...For example one coin from the Netherlands, 10 cents 1944-D is a very difficult coin which comes up for sale very rarely. Most were melted and few made it back to the Netherlands and into the hands of collectors.

Now THAT is a cool set idea, and wow, quite a roster. I'd often wondered how many pieces would form such a set.

I have one, but not slabbed. Like George said sometimes the plastic is worth more. That B.C. type is probably $60-80 market value, which isn't bad, but not enough to slab at this time on my tight budget. Maybe when things get a little looser I'll submit it. Right now I can only afford to slab 3-digit coins for resale, for the most part.

To answer George's question, I started an official registry set of my own so we'll see how far along I get image Not intending to fill it as many are low denominations and I tend to focus on crown-sized proofs. But one never knows!

Yeah in so large a set it's a funny mixture, all those crown-sized coins you mention, lots of rare gold pieces, and then those way common (or at least low-value) world coins that you just kinda have to hope you can pick up at a show for next to nothing. I have been thinking about starting the set myself. Like I'm not spread too thin already between U.S., Canada, Great Britain, and Australia!

Good luck everybody. Maybe we can keep this thread going as we make progress.

It's funny you mention getting them pre-slabbed at a show, because often when I'm on eBay or at shows, and I'm thinking about getting a lower-value coin, I'll say to myself "do I really wanna buy this raw, or do I wanna wait for a slabbed one?" because typically the cost is the same or only slightly higher. Especially for the lower-value coins, I rarely see a plastic markup on eBay unless it's a top-pop.

I know of one active dealer who has been accumulating such coins for awhile now.
He is getting the high grade good stuff , he is way ahead of the curve.

Your guide book is "Foreign Coins Struck At United States Mints" by Altz & Barton
1963 by the whitman company 63 pages, little black book. There is another hardback but can remember the title.

I agree the complete date U.S Philippines and Hawaii should be left out of the set. Maybe just do a U.S. struck Philippine type set

There have been articles in the trades and the Numismatist over the years on the area but not alot of interest it seems.

I think this is a great way to collect foreign coins. You would learn alot about foreign coins in general as you looked through many dealers World coin boxes.

Hey George, maybe since you like the Canadian bacon so much you should consider collecting all the world coins minted by RCM? I wouldn't be surprised if the list was even longer than that of our US mints (not counting Franklin, of course). I once copied/pasted that list from Wikipedia. If you want I can try to find it.

    Interesting idea.

I'm sure lots of folks would be interested to see it. But for now I'm just concentrating on trying to keep a nice mix of U.S. and Canadian, with a bit of British and Australian.
