Anyone On CU Board Self Publish A Book Before?

I know we have some amazing folks on the CU board and wanted to see if anyone has self-published a book before? I am working on my NASCAR trading card book and wanted to see if anyone self-published and how they like it?

  • I self-published a book about 12 years ago. I don't recommend it. The market for books was bad then and it is much worse now. In addition, it's a ton of work with very little return (at least in my case). Here's my book:

I think a better alternative is a website, they're very simple to create these days and far less expensive and time consuming. Here's my website: www.fatdaddyssports.com.

i'm about to publish my very first work entitled "The John Garthman Songbook: Lullabies And Arsenic In Your Eyes."
  • I haven't but Vince Flynn did and look where he is now. Of course this is fiction vs. non-fiction. I'd say go for it, nothing ventured is nothing gained.

    Bump for AM crowd.

I hoped to get a few questions answered. Would an e-book be a better way to go? Who would you choose to do the book forward? Who is the best self-book publisher to use? What to price the book at?

I wrote a play copyrighted as "One More Dying Quail" but produced as "Throwing Heat" because the director feared people would not know it is about baseball. I can refer you to a copyright lawyer who should be able to file anything you want to publish for about $150. The play was produced in May of 2009 and the copyright was completed in August of 2011. It lost money and no one chose to pick it up, but I AM PROTECTED.

Read the one review if you care to.

My father had his first two books published by a regular publisher, but his latest one was self-published.

His latest book was very well done, and is probably the best book ever written on the subject. Link
I doubt it has sold 5k copies. Marketing a self-published book can be very costly and time consuming.

The actual printing of the book was done by a Canadian company. I don't remember their name. PM me if you want details.
Printing a book with lots of photos and quality paper can also be very costly.

From what I've seen of the process, I don't advise self-publishing.

I think e-books are a great way to go these days. You eliminate many up front costs (including storage).

I know somebody wrote a book and published it from the CU board. It was a book about a T-206 Wagner. Seems like a young boy worked in the factory were the cards were made and was asked to destroy the Wagner cards and kept one for himself.

    Bought it and read it.

    It was several years back.

print on demand. If you are set on publishing a book, it is the way to go. Adam Warshaw's boxing card book is distributed via lulu print on demand. There are other print on demand sites, so you have options.

I did it a few years ago

I was very happy with the publisher and the help I was given. My motivation wasn't to make any money, though. I did it just to do it.

I mean, how many people do you know who say, "I'm going to write a book someday!", and never do it? Of course!

That's all the motivation that I needed.

Here is the story of a young adult writer which may sway you to e-publish rather than traditionally self publish...

    From her Wikipedia page:

...she wrote novels in her spare time. In April 2010, she began self-publishing them as e-books. By March 2011, she had sold over a million copies of nine books and earned two million dollars from sales, something previously unheard of for self-published authors. In early 2011, she averaged 9,000 book sales each day.

2.5 is pretty much my speed.
