1974 Topps Alou error

I was going through some old ephemera (paper) collectibles in my hoard and found some items from the Card Collectors Company. This specific offer from 1981 was to buy a copy of the 1974 Topps Jesus Alou error card. I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this here before, but I see a lot of error card collecting going on so thought I'd share this piece.

Does anyone have one of these?? I didn't buy any '74T cards, so I don't have a copy.

Average price for a PSA 8 is about $13, for a PSA 9 it's almost $17. Not rare at all in high grade. That ad was just jumping on the error craze of the early 1980's.

Interesting card though. Is it an error or a variation, or both. Did they initially print the card wrong without a position, quickly catch the mistake and correct it, a classic case of a variation. Or was it correct initially and a printing error occurred later in regard to the black ink on a few sheets before being caught. Or does it even matter which way it occurred.
