1967 mantle checklist variations

There are clearly 3 variations for this checklist yet only 2 are recognized does anyone know why this is? I noticed this while looking at this auction.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1967-Topps-103-Checklist-Mantle-170-D-McAuliffe-PSA-8-/221000431692?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item3374a6f84c

I found several of these cards like the auction above, there is just a little scratch of black instead of anything resembling a period.

You can also find this card with the period printing fully visible. 170 is 'D. Mcauliffe'

Then there is the other rarer variation where the period is completely missing 170 is 'D Mcauliffe'

Bumping my curious question up because I am sure some of you card historians know more about this.

I don't know why all 3 are not listed. Bob Lemke, who posts on this board, used to be the editor for SCD, which lists just 2 versions. Maybe he was unaware of the 3d version, although , ironically the description " no period" in general fits both of the other 2 versions. I found the line version first in looking for the "no period", and thought that was it since there was "no period" image. I later became aware that there was in fact one with no period and no line.

As you get into variations you will see there are many not listed. A good friend of mine spoke with Mr. Lemke and was told the Standard Catalog was bieng "downsized" (?) and there wasn't much interest in some of the obscure variations.

This was in reference to a question on the MLB Photostamps, that also have very obvious differences that are not listed.

Well thank you good sir for providing the missing link to my investigation but something still isn't right. After reading that 3 year old post I conclude that the first auction that I linked is actually a mislabel and somebody quickly and smartly snatched that card up probably to resubmit and sell it as correctly labeled but misleadingly low pop. The pop report is badly skewed with incorrect information regarding this variation and the reason for this is mentioned in the post you have linked.

    103a Checklist 110-196 170 Is D.Mcauliffe (584 Graded)
    103b Checklist 110-196 170 Is D Mcauliffe (130 Graded)

Lets assume for the sake of cardboard science that PSA has erroneously graded at least 228 of these scratch marked checklists as 103a - what we have here is actually a case where the real 103a (with the full period) is technically the rarer variation. While it is apparently fact that PSA has mislabled a large amount of these cards, what is unclear is how many. It is very reasonable to assume that at best the scratch mark checklist is no more or less rare than the period version.

BUT...there is clearly a version of this checklist that exists that has no period at all. I speculate that this checklist is extremely rare and only a handful of these would exist due to them being a result of the end of the (scratch mark) printing run where the ink was expiring on an already sketchy printing spot.

    Oh there's more!

Funny enough on the front of these checklists the player "John Kennedy" also has unique printing that I just noticed. On the full period version, the 2nd leg of the 2nd N is skinny. On both the scratch and missing period versions the 2nd N in has extra printing which almost makes it look like an "A"...and to take it a step further (I have 8 of these in hand right now of both common variations) the printing on both the scratch period versions and the missing period versions is actually slightly bolder on the back compared to full period version (Confused yet?) This can really be seen on #'s 151-155 and the copyright at the bottom and ESPECIALLY on the tiny dot above the N in #147 Tom Egan.

So in summary there was (at least 2 different) printing runs of this card and at the end of one of the runs an extremely rare mantle variation was produced, if you have one cherish it. This card probably should have 3 different variations recognized if for no other reason because its the mick.

Something still isn't right because I found this card in eBay completed auction history that sold for $700.

1967 Topps Baseball Checklist #103 PSA 8.5 D McAuliffe TOUGH Variation Set Break

This card is missing the period completely but it doesn't follow my rules about Kennedy and the Bold printing...I begin to speculate that the above card is actually doctored although I would have to see a few more of the complete missing period cards to be sure.

So does anyone actually have one of these period completely missing mantles??? I'll bet if you do the Kennedy on the front has an N that looks like an 'A'.
