S.B.A. QUESTION?ON MODERN TYPE SET(1950-Present)

What is the difference in these two requirements?

Susan B. Anthony Dollar - Narrow Rim (1979) Proofs
Susan B. Anthony Dollar (1979-1999) Proofs

The 1997 Proof is a Narrow Rim,would one coin do for both spots?

Is 'Narrow Rim' called out on the holder?

All 1979 SBA Proofs are Narrow Rim.

Supercoin explained it all to me very nicely, when I asked him the same question. Thanks Supercoin! image

  • Thanks Again Tad,but why the 2 slots when the 1979's are the same.Looks like an oversite on PCGS's part...

If they wanted 2 SBA's why don't they say on one (1980,81,99) and 1979 on the other...........?

I haven't been following the PCGS set requirements -- do you have a link to where it's shown?

Unless I am reading the wrong set requirements, it is because the 1979 Circulation Strikes come both ways. (tell me if this is wrong)

  • Yes, looks like the confusion is from allowing both proof and business strikes -- from what I understand, you're supposed to have a Narrow Rim and a Wide Rim. So your 1979 proof can't do double-duty.

Here's a copy from a post of mine a while back, and it's also the same info I sent BJ at PCGS. Note the ambiguity about the 1999 coins -- your call as to what to do on that. I'm not actively pushing anything at PCGS.

Numbers before the date are the PCGS coin numbers.

    ---------

    NARROW RIM:

    9571 - 1979-P SBA$ MS
    9572 - 1979-D SBA$ MS
    9573 - 1979-S SBA$ MS

    99589 - 1979-S SBA$ Type 1 PRDC
    99590 - 1979-S SBA$ Type 2 PRDC

    WIDE RIM:

    99571 - 1979-P SBA$ Wide Rim MS
    9574 - 1980-P SBA$ MS
    9575 - 1980-D SBA$ MS
    9576 - 1980-S SBA$ MS
    9578 - 1981-P SBA$ MS
    9579 - 1981-D SBA$ MS
    9580 - 1981-S SBA$ MS

    99592 - 1980-S SBA$ PRDC
    99594 - 1981-S SBA$ Type 1 PRDC
    99595 - 1981-S SBA$ Type 2 PRDC

    1999 REDESIGN:

    9581 - 1999-P SBA$ MS
    9582 - 1999-D SBA$ MS
    99596 - 1999-P SBA$ PRDC

The 1999 are a complete re-design from the "classic" 1979-1981 design, so calling them Narrow Rim or Wide Rim does not make sense.

I believe the 1999 coins are currently classified as Wide Rim in the PCGS type sets, though if anything they are more like a Narrow Rim in appearance.

More importantly for type set purposes, the difference between a classic and 1999 SBAs is more dramatic than the relatively minor difference between the Wide Rim and Narrow Rim designs.

I believe any of the following would make far more sense for type set purposes than what is currently being used (2 SBAs in type set, a Narrow Rim and Wide Rim):

    1 SBA in type set:
    Any date

    2 SBAs in type set:
    Any 1979-1981 date (Classic design)
    Any 1999 date (1999 redesign)

    3 SBAs in type set:
    Any 1979 Narrow Rim
    Any 1979-1981 Wide Rim
    Any 1999 date

  • Tad,

Last e-mail I received had everything straight at PCGS -- 1979 proof coin or 1979 PDS for the Narrow slot, 1980-1999 proof or 1979 P Wide or 1980-1999 MS coins for Wide Rim slot.

I know that you feel that the 1999 slot should be separated off, but at least they have the 1979's sorted out correctly now.

THE QUESTION WILL COME UP AGAIN & AGAIN

Hey, I need something to keep me out of trouble. image

Of course if they followed my (far more sensible) suggestion for a 2 coin representation:

Susan B. Anthony Dollar - Classic design (1979-1981)
    Susan B. Anthony Dollar - Redesign (1999)

    Voila! No confusion. image
  • If they leave it as is, you can raise the prices on all the 1979 pieces since there are only 4 narrow rim coins and 12 wide rim coins to choose from for Type sets. image
