Finally found a find

I have a friend who calls me a couple of times a month with a great lead on a run of 50s and 60 Topps sets. We have subsequently been to lots of houses with monster boxes of '88 Donruss rescued from a kitty litter box. Same call a few days ago, and I told him I was in if it panned out. I just got back from his house. My wife's Tahoe is pretty full. It looks like a collector was puting together Topps sets from the 50s. There is a good chunk of a set from each year 1957- 1962. Nothing is really complete, but there are a whole lot of stars. Condition is all over the place, but there are some gems. Unfortunately, there is a lot of modern stuff as well. In the modern stuff I found a 1952 Topps reprint set from 1983 and an unsealed box of 1989 Upper Deck packs. I would say there is enough to fill about five foot lockers. Nearly all of the good stuff would fit in one foot locker.

This is not spectacular find by any stretch of the imagination, but it feels like a victory right now. I will do my best to get some pictures posted tonight.

Here are the sets. The commons are in the boxes and the stars, semi-stars, and I'm guessing his favorite players are in toploaders.

It looks like there are only two cards missing from the '57 set. Nothing else is very close to complete. I've started to sort and scan the singles as I put them into CS1s.

What you are going to want to do is let your eyes dance around the top of this picture. That's right. Those boxes say "Collector Set." Now you know you are into a serious collection. There is no way Score is going to risk their good name and reputation by letting one of their Collector Sets get into the hands of just any jackass off the street. I can only imagine who one would have to know to get their paws on those babies. I can almost guarantee there was some serious espionage going down.

Any chance you can throw up a scan of the '59 Mays? Tough to find centered and that one looks pretty good..............from a distance. Thanks. Doug

might be interested in Mr Cub but no rush.
  • Congrats!! I usually come up with one decent find during garage sale season. Came across this just on Saturday so my luck might be out for the rest of season.
VerizonWireless bag of a complete set Topps 1986 football & 88 misc. mid grade cards. Uncle's collection consisted of about a mix of 70% football with rest being baseball, hockey & basketball. About 60% rookies.
Here are scans of big names in Saturday's lucky find..

You probably want to loosen those screws on the screwdown holders ASAP. You can tell they are WAY too tight by the grayish looking corners on the cards.

Off to work. This experience has shown me that I definitely need to keep my day job. Here is a quick scan of some of the ‘59s. I’ll do the same with 1960 ASAP.

You have a nice group of cards there Jim. I think the key is that they look pretty crease free except for the first group you posted. Nice '59 Mantle and Mays which looks to both be in the 5 grade area. The '60 Yaz and Mays along with Mantle, Maris, and Banks AS look to be the best in that group. '57's look clean too except for a few centering issues. Good luck with your sale and thanks for sharing. Doug

There is a bit of football too. I know very little about that.

Here are some of my favorite cards from this collection. The first two are pictures glued to 1960 commons. The Kluszewski has a hat that is literally cut and pasted, probably from another '56 card. It looks like he glued a new team name over Cincinnati, but that has since fallen off. This guy had some passion for baseball. If you asked him if a card was mint, he would most likely confess he had never tasted one.
