Ball Boys - Pete Rose & Honus Wagner

Watching Ball Boys on my DVR, (not the best), but today they had Pete Rose on and they made a separate trip to one of the best collections I've ever seen. It was the private collection of Dr. Nicholas Depace. The only showed part of his collection, but what they showed was awesome. He had DiMaggio & Monroe's wedding AND divorce certificates, a helmet worn by Jim Thorpe, a game used bat signed by Babe Ruth, the 1919 promissory (sp) note that signed over Babe Ruth from the Red Sox to the Yankees, which he said was the original (the Hall of Fame only had a copy), and last but not least, the first card I've seen on the show....a T206 Honus Wagner which he aquired from the Nuns of Baltimore after it was willed to them by one of their brothers. I couldn't tell the grade, but I believe it was graded a 4 by SGC.
I wish there was a show dedicated just to this guys collection.

  • Agreed on not the best. I saw the episode with Jim Brown and it was as far as one can go with the plastic simulated reality televison as it can get. Not a fan and that is a bummer. Finally a show about this world and it isn't done right. It is cool to see the collections (wish I saw this Depace show) but a show like this shouldn't have the fake acting stuff. A better show would simply be filming dudes at home, with their just delivered PSA packages full of freshly graded cards where the grades are not known. (no previous peeks online at the grades). Everyone has to have some kind of ritual with it.

I agree, I'd spend a 30 minutes to an hour watching other people open their doors to us. There has got to be some great collections out there.

Here is a link to an article about DePace opening his own museum. DePace Museum

I have yet to wait to see what my grades are after I found out I could check online. The first year I used PSA it was all in the mail when I found out the grades. Was very fun. Today I check at least once a day to see if they poped before I even get the email. If they have I close my computer and grab a sheet of paper. Then cover the screen and I reveal the grades one at a time. LOL
  • wow.. exactly. This is funny handyman. I was doing the exact same 'piece of paper over the screen thing' You literrally exactly described what I was doing. The rituals must be understod across our world !. I checked the subs, and when I actually saw 'grades pop up' I got p*ssed, covered the screen, grabbed a notebook to cover up the screen and started to look through the top 5 or so on the list (hoping I wouldn't remember them) Would then close out the browser and await my fate from the box when it arrived. And THEN when the box arrives, it's a different kind of ritual. A ritual that could be considered 'strange' by the unbelievers out there. I don't care though. eff them !

lmao, I do the exact same thing. When I hit the sub number and it populates grades I immediately turn away and grab a sheet of paper or cardboard. I also open the pop report and VCP and go very slowly down the screen one at a time. When a great grade appears I check VCP right then. Glad to know I'm not the only card geek that does this, lol.

I usually do the same thing as well. It's like a celebration. EBay, VCP, fresh poppage!!! I was out last night when my grades popped. Had to see them...

    LOL.
Yep corvett. I do that as well with the VCP and pop report.
I changed it up a little last time. I closed the screen and hit print and did them all row by row on a print out(also covered with a sheet of paper) and then wrote the VCPs and pops next to them.
But that was a first with the print out.

Didnt like that way as much so Im going back the reg routen.

Yeah and its also a new story once I get the package as well. Somehow you could call it organizing but I kind of just place them all over the house in random storage and what not if you didnt know what I was doing it would look wierd.
