How would you double $10,000

Before I submit the question, let me qualify it by saying this is just an exercise. I collect who and what I like because I love the hobby and pay only secondaryl attention to the investment aspect. With that said, there is certainly an investment side to the hobby, so I'd like to see the different ways people would tackle this.

Suppose you have $10,000 cash and the goal is to double it as quickly as possible. You can only do this by buying, selling, flipping, etc. sports cards. Anything illegal or unethical is off limits (i.e. counterfeiting, trimming, etc.). So let's hear how you would do it on the up and up. I look forward to hearing the wide variety of ways this could be done.

  • Just buy and sell, plain and simple. Buy enough bulk that you can get a quantity discount and then break it down into either smaller lots or singles. I do this and it helps burn time and make a few bucks.... I'm sure it could be scaled up with more time & money.

I would take a shot on a variety of different ungraded 1975 and prior wax packs, rip them... hope for PSA 9's and 10's and HOFers.

I would love to do this but a recipe for disaster! LOL I think the odds would be about the same as buying a lottery ticket and going for the big prize image If it were only that simple....

You could have done it easily over the winter.

Buy as many 2011 bowman chrome Eric Hosmer auto cards as possible. Would have cost no more than $200 per card raw.

Then sell today, they are going for around $650 per card raw.

They only problem is you would have needed to buy 50 of them to get to $10,000, and they were pretty scarce over the winter. Now with the high prices a lot more are coming out of the woodwork.

Miconelegacy is on target with any of the 2012 Bowman products this year. I may dip myself into 2-3 cases when chrome comes out because it has a good load of talent in it this year. Some bowman hits go for such incredible money. Of course, like opening any unopened, its a gamble. Spend 5K and you might end up getting 2K back or maybe 8K back. I also understand his method of grading and then selling for profit. Seems his business model probably successful but its a lot of work. Then again, when isnt a few thousand dollars a lot of work?

Something else that many do and are successful are buying and breaking high grade vintage sets. A TON of work involved with that.

You can always look and try to get steals from auction houses then flip. Works well with pre-war if you know what you are buying and what you can get for it. Most of those guys buying the pre-war stuff for resale already have buyers and know what they can get for prices so they have less risk. So with no clients, it can make it a bit tougher. I would say the same with auto'd items in auction houses.

Find 10-20 high dollar cards that could bump with the biggest difference between a psa 8 and a psa 9.
    Registry Sets:
    T222's PSA 1 or better

Temporary insanity and is simply th IT rookie right now.

We wont talk about basketball or football but strictly baseball and players that brought high prices when we(collectors and investors) put them in the Hall of Fame after a few hundred at bats. I'm sure the high on the following cards were up inthe stratosphere. The following were on fire and were once trading for over five hundred bucks. They are not slouches either.

    2002 Bowman Chrome David Wright
    2003 Bowman Best Ryan Howard
200 Ultimate Collection Prince Fielder (May still be up there in price with his new team)

The following were a couple hundred at their high point and can now be had at half that price

    2002 Bowman Chrome Joe Mauer
    2003 Bowman Chrome Hanley Ramirez
2003 Bowman Heritage Insert Robinson Cano
    200* Bowman Chrome Evan Longoria
    2007 Bowman Chrome Tim Lincecum

Looking at the above, I'd suspect speculators artficially drive up prices, flip them, with collectors the ones ultimately holding onto them. You'll also see the set to bust cases on annually and grade are the Bowman Chrome cases.

Toro, I think the Hosmer's are probably bringing too much, I have one at PSA now that I bought for $200 and I want to get it back and sell it as soon as possible. A member PM'd me about why they are so high and this was my response:

There are a couple sellers on ebay saying there's not as many out there as they first thought.

Usually on Bowman Chrome auto's, there are quite a few just regular auto cards, then 500 refractor autos, 150 blue refractor autos, 50 gold refractor autos, 25 orange refreactor autos, 10 purple autos and the one superfractor.

With Hosmer they are saying there are only 250 regular chrome autos, no refactor autos and no blue refractor autos. They may be right because I haven't seen any refactor or blue refractors for sale on ebay. I have seen the others.

I wish I would have known sooner, I would have bought as many as I could, I only bought 1 over the winter.

FYI, as one that has a lot of Musial stuff, if your looking to buy Musial Auto's today, make sure it's been signed Stan "The Man" Musial. There is so much Stan Musial stuff out there, but not a lot with "The Man" inscription. It will bust loose when he passes.

Pretty sure he asked what the quickest way to double the money would be by buying and selling CARDS ONLY. I like Micronlegacy's system of busting and grading. Its fun and can also be profitable.

A 1954 Bowman Mantle PSA 9 just sold for $28,000 in the Greg Bussineau auction. That card was selling for $10,000 not too long ago, so you could have almost tripled your money. I would say stay with high end stuff like Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth and Bobby Orr. Those are can't miss investments.

If we are talking about a return within a year I would buy the sport in the off season.

So I would do football right now.

I would buy a lot of Andy Dalton high end rookies. The Bengals are set up to be a pretty good team with all their draft picks. He has a great WR and a good TE. This kid seems to have his head screwed on straight.

If my goal was to double in a short period this would be my move.
