52 Topps Mantle

Are the prices on the 52 Topps Mantle increasing significantly? There is one on ebay right now that will end tomorrow night graded PSA 4. It seems overpriced at tis point, and I am sure there will be more bids in the closing seconds. Any idea what price it closes at?

  • There's a lot of variance especially on the lower grades. The eye-appeal is strong with this one hence the high price. Might be a 4.5 candidate? Link

    My guess would be $11,350.

That is a very strong 4. Great eye appeal.

I agree it may get a .5 bump as the upper right corner has a slight dog ear. The centering and the edges are strong for sure, nice card.
  • This Mantle is available locally, still working on this guys collection.

  • Sean, is the wrinkle on the back? I'd be all over that for 12,5+
  • The wrinkle is supposedly on the front of the card I looked at it with an l e d lights for almost 10 minutes and could not find it

I think the slab looks a little funky.

FWIW both look fine to me. Unless I'm missing something. I had an educational and in depth talk with PSA at their offices about slabs a few months ago, even posted a thread about it for others who might be curious. Based on what they said to look for these two seem cool. But others could know some more.

The one linked above on e-bay right now looks very solid and the seller has great feedback. It could easily be a typo or just a mistake, but per VCP it sold a year ago in April 2011, and in the listing's Q&A it says it's been in one place for 2 years. Bit of a time discrepancy there. Maybe the card/scan was hijacked for that April 2011 auction, which is then a phantom piece of data in the VCP history? That's a random theory but just spitballing out loud.
  • Did anyone call the owner of the one on ebay out on the fact that there is a VCP history from last year? I am also seeing a slight tilt going from left to right on the top. Anyone else see that? Is this Mantle actually legit?
  • There is also a sale for the same card on 11/2/10
  • Whew - what a morning!

My name is Brian - MLBFAN07 - and I am the owner of this auction for the PSA 4 Mickey Mantle thats online right now.
First off - HUGE THANKS to Matt (MattyC) and Bobby from VCP for the posts below and the emails.

I have owned The Mick since November of 2010. The auction that was run in April 2011 was a scam - looks like the seller "SPORTSGEM2010" is no longer conducting business on Ebay and was actually given a negative for that auction.

I just took a pic of The Mick with this forum being the background. If anyone wants a copy of that pic or any other high res scans please email me at mlbfan2007@verizon.net.

Luckily I was able to find an old log in for this forum so I was able to try and clear up any questions.

Thank you again and please let me know if you have any questions at all!

  • That is the thought that actually popped in to my head when I read those posts - I kind of figured someone was trying to scam and used that serial # or scan of the card.
