Silver American Eagle Proof went onsale today

tneigtneig Posts: 1,505 ✭✭✭
Silver American Eagle Proof went onsale today at the usmint.gov site.

Silver went up a buck, so the eagle at $59 is a buck lower right off the bat.
(depending upon how you look at things)

Except for shipping I don't know of a place where you can get them cheaper (right now).
However, I can buy previous ones at my local shop for $60. No increase in value,
and no reason to see this years run as anything especially valuable, so
is it better for me to just buy 2 generic rounds or bars instead, for the long run?

How long do these runs last at the mint, before they are sold out. Seems like a few months?

I think they're over valued. I won't pay that kind of premium. IMO the price will drift towards spot, while maintaining some premium...perhaps 10%.

Good feedback. Thanks. I'll be looking for them cheaper over time.

Seems that litterally most purchases through the usmint site are inflated too much. Certainly the annual coin sets, commemoratives, even coin bags and rolls are inflated. I can get most of the older coin sets for cheap after 20+ years so not seeing to much investment potential, but continuing my set of annual proof sets is just for pleasure and ok for that single purchase. (Oh, The wife supplemented a few missing silver annual sets from govmint and I almost choked to death when she told me the $$. hah)

But on the Eagle proofs, at local shops, and ebay and craigs, I see them hold the initial $ cost (not that holding is good). So I'm still very curious and learning. Its nice to have a few shiney ones, so I limit it to that (2 on their subscription plan).

Rather buy local/cheap silver rounds/bars at spot dips for best investment potential ($1 to $1.50/spot, $3 over for eagles at the local coin shop.)

terrible bullion investment. Buy only if you see numismatic value (I don't).

I have a 1987 that my grandmother gave me, that'll be the only one I ever have. My local guy sells them for $70 I believe and doesn't have too much of a problem getting rid of them.

My grandson is getting one of these, but he probably doesn't know that they aren't the greatest investment.image

Gave up collecting the series. Only now have the reverse 07 and the 06 and 011 Anniversary Sets. Only potential I see. The 95 W has reached its saturation point, though did see it climb to $4K two years ago and has since dropped.

I collect them because I like them.As much as I would like to be able to buy them at spot plus 10% that will never happen. They usually sell for a premium of 90% or more.Stackwise not a great deal. You cant even get a plain SAE for less than spot plus about 30%.Many e bayers are selling them for $40 with S&H or $36 plus 2.99 s&h,and many online dealers sell plain ones for $34 with $8 s&h so with spot at $31.50 you still have to shell out about $40.

I gave up on them, I have just one 1986 for my 7070.
Proof silver is tough to keep in good shape in my area. (I am surprised my Mexican Aztec Calendar hasn't been affected by the humidity)

  • If you have a subscription set up how long does it take for them to be shipped after release?

I think it can take two weeks, plus I glanced at a delay message I don't recall if applies here.
