From what I understand, the Strongsville show is a monthly show, but I think this one is a bigger three-day version. I've never been to it though. The only monthly show I ever attend is the Jane Bosley Show in North Canton.
Hi everyone, I live in Parma Ohio which borders Strongsville. I'm about fifteen minutes from the Holiday Inn. The show used to be big time years ago but hasn't been that great recently in my opinion. The holiday inn where it is being staged was used by the National when in was in Cleveland before they moved to the IX Center. Someone mentioned that they thought it was a monthly show but that is not true. years ago it used to have almost monthly shows but that was a long time ago. if you do come to the show there is huge mall (SOUTHPARK MALL) almost next store to it. you will find lots of places to eat and if you bring your special other lots of places to shop. The holiday inn is right off of 71 and easy to find. I'll probably go one of the days. HOnestly I haven't been to the last few shows there so it may have changed but the last time I went it was not the greatest. I'll contact BigDaddyBowman who lives near me and ask Ryan if he's been to the show recently..... al.
Forgot to mention, if you only have to drive 30 minutes then make the trip....it's going to be nice this weekend. unfortunately the Tribe is out of town but you still have the Rock Hall and lots of other things downtown.....and next year you'll be able to make a short trip downtown to gamble!!!! JEFFC: Jane's show is this weekend also if I'm not mistaken. She always has a great show in my opinion. I used to set up there. in the late 90's early 00's. Used to have two tables at the Holiday Inn for years. When you walked in the door to the room and made a left I was always straight ahead. Used to have the older autograph guy next to me for several years. Miss the show but my kids started getting older and I just didn't have the time to set up anymore.
Good show for vintage. Almost nothing post 1990. Most of the big auction houses are present and I know SGC, Beckett and JSA are usually there doing submissions, but I do not think they are doing onsite grading. PSA has attended in the past, but I do not know if they will be present this year.
If you live within an hour and are a vintage collector this is probably as good as you are going to get. If you like modern then do not waste your time. I will be out on Friday and Sunday this year most likely.
Hey Al, I set up at that show once when it was at the Holiday Inn in Belden Village. I remember it was the show where Enos Slaughter was signing. My brother and I just split a table, we were very small-time. I think I made about $100 there and my bro made even less. Regardless, it was a blast sitting on the other side of the table! Jane is good people. Her show is actually on the 22nd this month, and Archie Griffin is signing!
I think I might ask the wife if she wants to come with me this Sunday, especially with Southpark Mall next door. Should make for an enjoyable Sunday getaway.
I'll probably stop out there on Friday...I'll let you all know how it is.....JEFFC: I used to always have one of my kids with me when I did Jane's show, usually my son. I was at the Enos Slaughter show and probably still have his auto. I'm going to see if I have any pictures from back then and I'll post. Unfortunate that Jane lost her husband at such a young age. He used to always crack me up......al.
There is (well was the last time I was there) a card shop about 3-5 miles from the Holiday Inn. I want to say its called George's. Its used to be a decent shop with lots of wax and singles. I dont know if its still there but some of you may want to check it out also.
George's closed a few years ago, in fact the building it was in was torn down. If you go down Pearl rd where it used to be there is now a big open space.....along that route is a sports bar called Cleats if anyone has interest in decent tasting wings....been there many times. al.
I have gone to this show every year since its origin. In regards to the question whether its a good show or not, that is pretty much based on what your looking for. It is promoted as a vintage show, so there is very little newer material....although a few dealers will sneak some in. Baseball tends to be about 75% of the show, football the rest. It typically has alot of raw and graded. There is a handful of memorabilia and non-card dealers. Looking at the dealers on the list, they are pretty much the same as in past years so I expect much of the same. Its about a 10 minute drive for me, so I am sure I will be going again....even though I am trying not to buy. Last year I sold about $3,500 of cards to Savage Cards....and about $2 grand the year before. I may bring some of my stuff up to sell.....unfortunately this is my family's Easter weekend and my daughter has an AAU basketball tournament on Saturday and Sunday so finding time this year will be tough. If your within an hour drive, I think its worth it. You dont get many opportunities to get a large banquet room full of vintage dealers so I think its worth it. Ill probably go Saturday morning or Friday evening. If you see a big guy hawking his cards and then crying afterwards...that will be BigDaddyBowman.
thanks Ryan, I figured you probably had stop in recently. Tell your daughter good luck in her tournament. Is she playing on one of the SMAC teams or with someone else? al.

Hi Al,
She plays for Ohio Swish run by my girls coach. How did your 55 bowmans turn out?
I just started getting back into cards after a 23 year layoff and am thinking about attending this show. Since I haven't been to a card show since I was 10 years old in 1989, I have some questions...
- How often are trimmed cards sold at card shows? How can you tell if a card has been trimmed? - How can you tell if a pack has been re-sealed? - Do dealers do much negotiating over price? Are cards priced closer to Beckett pricing, or eBay completed sales?

Haven't gotten the bowman's yet, I'll get with you after they arrive. they said 7-10 days for shipping after payment and I paid for them on the 3rd so expect them anyday now. What grade is your daughter in?? I know you watched my son this year when they beat up on your varsity but he is graduating so next year I'll be watching my daughter. She was freshman last year and will be JV with an outside chance of playing varsity next year....is your daughter younger?? We can talk when we get together. al.
I enjoyed walking around the show yesterday. Did not buy much - kind of between collecting goals right now - but it was fun to check out the vintage sports items. Great autographed items available and many items I have never even seen before. Fun time for $4....
agree with JohnnyD, went to the show this morning and had a great time. Ran into a number of dealers from the Cleveland area who I hadn't seen for awhile. Lots of older stuff with not much new stuff. Also as noted lots of autographed stuff, in fact I took Willie Mays and Pete Rose posters with me that I've had for years and JSA is authenticating them ....will pick them up later today. Nice selection, was worth it. Show is lot better than last time I went. al.
Huggins auctions was there, Kevin Savage, Heritage, JSA, Fusco auctions, Jack's Cards, Scott Snyder (who I have know for years from the Cleveland area) and a lot more. I'll get the list when I go back to get my posters and will post later today. al.

I am no expert, but I can try to answer some of your questions:
To tell if a star/rookie card is trimmed, I will try to pick up a common or minor star from the same set/year from the same dealer table(typically, a guy selling stars raw will have non-stars as well) and put it in back of the star card to see if they match up.
Telling if a pack has been resealed is tough, although I would look to see if the "shine" on the wax on/near the seal has been dulled or disturbed, and also check if the corners still look tight, flat and un-chipped.
Most dealers will budge at least a bit on price (occasionally you will find guys who will give great discounts depending on how much you buy) After attending a few shows and making offers, you will find out what dealers will and won't discount. Unless a card is vintage and in awesome shape, I think you will find you can pick up most stars/rookies for 30 to 60 % off Beckett high prices.
I ended up going out to the show this afternoon. Found it to be a bit overwhelming at first, but settled down after doing a few laps around the room. I was hoping to find some unopened boxes from the mid-80s but no luck. I settled on a couple tables that had "bargain" bins and here's what I ended up with....
1959 Topps Ed Matthews ($9.00) 1959 Topps Frank Robinson ($15.00) 1960 Topps Master & Mentor ($5.00) When I got home I noticed this one has a stain on the bottom left corner. Oops. 1961 Topps Frank Robinson ($10.00) 1976 Topps Thurman Munson ($2.50) Condition not so great 1981 Topps Julius Erving ($2.50)
I have no idea how I did regarding prices paid... Will need to get better at that.
Got my Pete Rose and Willie Mays autographs authenticated, now will have to take the time to get them framed properly. Will get some scans up later. al.

T222's PSA 1 or better
