question about ASEs....fakes?

Hi all,
I recently did a transaction with another forum member that included 2 ASEs. I had noticed the surface of one looked a bit bubbled, but the other seemed ok. Both were in 2x2 flips, and since they were just like every other ASE I had ever handled, I went ahead and shipped them in those flips. When the other member took them out, he noticed that they sounded "dead" on a ring test, but weighed correct (though might be slightly thicker than normal). I tested them and they are silver, and pass a heavy magnet test. The bubbling on the surface on one of the ASEs looks like small pimples, but not too harsh and the other ASE has a bunch of odd toning on the back. He sent them back being concerned that they could be fake (no worries on our transaction, I took them back instantly). He suggested asking around here about them, so....has anyone run across fake ASEs before? Could these be fake or is it likely that they were once "colorized" or something like that and then treated with harsh chemicals to remove the color, creating the blisters?
Any ideas? Thanks much.

I have never seen one but, IMO, I doubt that they will be so close to the original eagles.
Something must be off, either the diameter, the thickness or the design.
