1956 Mantle help please

Hi. I'm new to the board. I'm trying to buy my husband a nice 1956 Topps Mantle for his 40th birthday. I've been looking for months, but haven't been able to pull the trigger. I want to make sure I'm not buying a fake. But I'm out of time and need to make a purchase soon.

I'm linking to a few cards I'm considering on ebay. If you don't mind, which of these cards would you purchase?

Mantle PSA 7

[L=Mantle SGC86]

Ungraded Mantle

Are any of them worth purchasing or should I look elsewhere?

Thank you SO much for your help!
Anissa

    Anissa,

I like the PSA 7...Centering on this card is key....I have the following if you are interested. My email is mrmint23@hotmail.com. The PSA 5 is now in a SGC 5 holder.

  • Thanks, MrMint. I'll definitely keep yours in mind too. I've studied so many scans of 56 Mantles that I no longer know what to look for.

On the PSA 7, does the flip look ok? I keep looking at the top border (white to red), which looks uneven. Wondering if it's just the scan or what's going on there.

    Thanks again!

Flip is fine just been a while since it was graded. Flips with the number grade below the ex-nm, nm, mt, etc...are the most recent. Grading standards seem to have changed and I would recommend looking for a newer flip.
Let me know if I can help.....but centering is the key to this card.
  • That PSA 7 looks solid and will make an amazing present for your hubby. VCP on it is $1260 but shooting up in price because the last 3 sales are all over $1500
  • Thank you, BobbyVCP! I never thought it would be this hard to choose/buy a baseball card. But once I started researching them...oh boy.

I'm surprised you used the word flip.

  • << <i>I'm surprised you used the word flip. >>

My thoughts exactly. No chance they were trying to drum up interest on an auction, right?

Glad I was not the only one who found that odd.

I could care less...I just thought it was strange to use that word. Maybe the husband uses the word all the time when describing the label. You never know. Who cares.

    How about "pull the trigger"?

What are the VCP prices for those cards? Are the cards in holders or slabs? Are there any mechanical errors that occurred during the poppage after the 10 day wait for loggage? They were probably all submitted in a bulk sub. The submitter probably requested no qualifiers. What are the most popular TPG's?////////////////My wife asked me all of these questions today.image

  • << <i>OK... pardon my ignorance.... please don't flame me.... What is the 'FLIP'??? >>

The top part of the holder where the PSA label is

  • << <i>I'm surprised you used the word flip. >>

Probably a guy either pumping up interest in one of his own auctions or some other message board weirdo behavior.

  • << <i>And why is the flip important? >>

Well the OP was asking if the label looked off/not correct. It's important because of the info it tells you about the card. That's it's job.
  • Wow. Just got back to the computer...

Didn't realize having a little knowledge was a bad thing. Honestly, I've been researching this card for months trying to figure out what to buy. Saw something about a Craigslist scam a few years back on the 56 Mantle PSA 7 that discussed issues with fake flips. Hence the question. I've studied the various versions of the PSA flips trying to educate myself. No one wants to drop a grand on a fake. At least I don't.

I do appreciate the comments and advice. I think I'll go "pull the trigger" now.
  • Ok Mr. Anissa. Lol

  • Thank you, Handyman!I just bought it. I figured a 56 Mantle is better than a surprise party. Lasts longer, at least. I hope he likes it. *fingers crossed*

I love how anyone claiming to be a woman is a liar until proven otherwise. I think we have exactly one person to blame for that.....

I don't go to many shows (ok, it has been at least 10-15 years since i have attended one). In my fifteen shows or so that I actually went to, I never saw a woman/girl at a show that was not either with a guy or buying something for a guy. And there weren't many of those. Never did I see a female actively looking for cards to complete her sets or anything like that. Maybe there are some female non-sports collectors? I know comic books have some female collectors. Why not cards?

Just ignore them, it's the standard of these boards that at least one accusation is made per thread. (Just kidding, but still ignore them).

Edit (Wouldn't be a Sean post without it right?):

In Phoenix there are 3 dealers that have wives who are partners/assistants come as well at least 10 I know of that attend shows consistently.

No idea why we don't have more women on these boards.
