Camden Yards - Yankees v. Orioles (Thanks for your comments/suggestions.)

Well, on Monday morning I'm heading to bring my daughter to visit the two colleges that she has narrowed her choices down to ... Loyola-Maryland and Providence.

On Monday night we, along with my younger daughter, are going to see the Yankees-Orioles game. It will be the first time that I have visited Camden Yards. I heard it is a nice park and I am looking forward to the game (even if we are sitting in the Upper Deck behind Home Plate.)

We are staying at the Radisson Plaza Lord Baltimore, which is only one mile from the stadium. For those of you familiar with the area, is there public transportation to the stadium from that area? Are we better off jumping in a cab? If so, will be be EZ enough to grab a cab after the game? I know the question I MUST ask is "Are there any good card shops in the area"? However, since we are going to get to Baltimore in the late afternoon on Monday, we are probably going to spend a couple of hours at the school on Monday and then go back on Tuesday morning, so the card shop is probably not going to happen.

Thanks for any comments you guys may have.

  • Great place! We stayed right in the Inner Harbor when we went, so I don't know anything about the transportation. My advice on the actual park would be: Go early, and go hungry! Tons of shops and food stands (Boog Powell has an AMAZING rib stand). Lot of cool things to do and see in and around the park. One of which is an awesome statue of Babe Ruth just outside the stadium (I forget exactly where)........ Just an overall great vibe, and beautiful ballpark.

Camden Yards is only about a 15 minute walk from the hotel you are staying in. I would suggest just walking because cabs can be a pain sometimes in Baltimore. If you dont mind walking an extra 5-10 minutes you could go the way that goes through the Inner Harbour which is neat to see to.

It is easily the nicest ballpark i have ever gone to. Definetely go to the Babe Ruth and Sports Legends Museum beside the stadium. It is awesome. And Boogs Barbeque is a must.

Speaking of Boog Powell's rib stand, he is there most days before the game signing autographs so you may want to bring a card or 2 if you're into that sort of thing. His food is great, too.

I would suggest taking a jim palmer and rick dempsey card as well. They are both seen sometimes walking around the stadium before games. Boog will sign anything for you though and take pictures. He will aslo have a conversation with you if people arent in line. He is a very nice guy.

Everyone has it spot-on. Can't go wrong with anything along Eutaw Street, which is the street that runs along the B&O Warehouse. You also can't go wrong with those seats because that's the perfect spot to admire the entire stadium. Unfortunately, it being a Yankee game, the stadium will be packed with more Yankee fans than Oriole fans... but I'm sure that won't be a problem for you.

Try to spend some time in the Inner Harbor, you could spend a whole afternoon there and not see enough. It's my favorite part of the city. I even like to go up into the city's World Trade Center to the Top of the World Observation Level where you can see a 360-degree view of the city and read about it's history.
  • You don't have to sit that high if you are willing to give ten bucks to an usher.
Go to the area right next to where the announcers sit behind home plate. There are isolated
chairs/seating areas away from the fans. I gave an usher ten or twenty bucks so my dad and I could
escape the one hundred degree heat one day. Great seats, and the usher was more then accomodating.

Try to hit Sports Legends Museum or the Babe Ruth birthplace if you have the time either Monday or Tuesday morning

Wow, with all that stuff going on it's no wonder why so many Red Sox fans flock to Camden for those Red Sox - Baltimore series. Looks like I'm gonna have to fly up one day and take in all that cool stuff one of these days.

Sounds like a lot of things to do. Thanks guys. While I may not have the time to do these things on this trip, if my daughter chooses Loyola-Maryland I think I'll be visiting more than she wants me to! LOL

    All great suggestions.

The Inner Harbor is a must, even if you only have a little time. Great shops, food and
    always some great street performers.

Boog has great food and grab a Polock Johnny's too.

If you have time for dinner, not sure if the game is day or night, take a short cab ride to
Little Italy. You can't go wrong.

An easy place to fill a day with good times and food!

    Enjoy!

The tour sounds like fun. I know my girls would not really enjoy it, so if my daughter does choose Loyola-Maryland then I'll have to take that tour myself when I go to visit her.

  • IMO - It doesn't matter where you sit, what you eat, or what you site see as long as you and the daughters are enjoying your time together. Be happy with what you do, not unhappy with what you miss. Make it a great day!

BTW - My wife and I saw A's / O's opening day a few years ago b/f she had cancer. (she's fine now - thanks for your support those years ago) A simple day and a great memory.

Went to the game last night. Was a lot of fun to go with my two daughters. I LOVED being there with them. The stadium is BEAUTIFUL. Had a great time. Unfortunately we did not have much time before the game to look around, as we hit a lot of traffic getting out of New York. There was a 75 mile span that should have taken about 75 minutes to travel ... it took us FRIGGIN THREE HOURS!!!!!

Heading to Loyola Maryland in about an hour to look at the school. Maybe tonight we can walk back to the Inner Harbor/Orioles Stadium and look around.

Well, I'm on my daughter's laptop and these laptop keyboards drive me crazy ... TTYL.

Well ... back home from looking at the last two colleges. THANKS VERY MUCH to all those who suggested things to do in Baltimore. Although we did not have time to do a lot (did go to the Yankee game on Monday ... did eat/drink at Pratt Street Ale House - my older daughter said the desert she got was THE BEST she EVER had), it looks like I will be going to a lot more Orioles games (maybe even a Ravens game) in the near future, as my daughter fell in love with Loyola-Maryland and will be making it her home for the next four years beginning in August.

Congratulations to your daughter on choosing Loyola-Maryland Doug. It is nice it worked out that she chose someplace close enough to you and I'm sure she is relieved that the process is over. Now the fun part starts.

BTW, I bet you can pick up some good Orioles-Mets tickets. image

IMF ... I saw them selling Natty Boh's ... what then hell is it? LOL I'd enjoy going to a game with you when I'm down there. Had a couples "DRAFT PUNKS" from the Pratt Street Ale House ... They were very good!

Congrats to your daughter for choosing a great school in Maryland!
Thanks Jeff! When I'm down there maybe a few of us can go to an Orioles game and have a "few" across the street at the Pratt Street Ale House as well.

Doug, you have 4 years to get those tickets. I'm sure the Mets will be down for a visit at least once during years 2 through 4. image
