Who did you miss on TTM and you regret it?

It has happened to us. Unfortunately it has happened to us. Somebody we missed on TTM and we regret it. They kicked the bucket before we could obtain their signature.

#1 Hank Bauer- I did get him TTM in the spring of 2006 on a card. For my 15th birthday in October 2006, I received the set of 1988/1989 Pacific Legends. It is a project I have worked on ever since. Sadly Hank Bauer died a few days after I sent him my second request for him to sign my Pacific Legends Card.

#2 Shag Crawford- Did not know he was still alive at the time of his passing. Otherwise I would've sent him his Pacific Legends Card to sign.

#3 Ed Palmquist- For my Maris Pitchers Project. I knew no cards of his. So I wish I sent him an IC.

#4 Dante Lavelli- I didn't have any cards or anything of his at the time of his passing.

#5 George McAfee- Same thing.

#6 Les Richter- Had no idea who he was at the time.

All of five of these really hurt. There is ebay I suppose.

For you TTM'ers out there, who did you pass on TTM that you wish you didn't?

I mailed something out to Red Grange and to Bronko Nagurski on the same day. A few days later, Bronko passed away. I got Grange back a couple of days later. I would have liked to have gotten Nagurski TTM. On the flip side, I did receive an autograph from a baseball player that was postmarked the day before he passed away. So, I probably have the last TTM he ever sent out.

  • That's good you got Grange. Both of them passed away before I was born.

Roberto Clemente. My brothers and I picked the players we could write to, much like a modern day fantasy baseball draft, and one of them picked Roberto. Back then we would write and just ask for an autographed picture and he got one back from Clemente.
  • THAT is sweet! Not for you but your brother. That is unfortunate for you.

Its bittersweet. I'm really not that disappointed I didn't get his auto, and I am happy my brother did, but its bittersweet because I think it was in 1971 that he got his auto and Roberto passed away the next year, on New years eve. It was a sad day for me when I heard he was gone.
  • Wish I sent the fees for Ollie Matson and Joe Perry.

The most recent player that I can think of that I regret not sending my rc to TTM was Ron Santo. He was one of the best signers IP and TTM and I always had the feeling he would eventually get into the HOF. For some reason I never got around to sending him my card.
  • George Yardley on his 1957 Topps rookie. Willis Reed and Elgin Baylor on their 1969 Topps. I regret not sending rookies to get signed by a lot of Hall of Famers.
  • Yes I wish I sent Ron Santo his fee for my pacific legends card but I got him IP in June 2005.

Regarding George Yardley, my dad always enjoyed seeing my autograph collection, and he decided to write to a few of his favorites. He sent a couple of index cards to George Yardley in the mid 90's. A couple of weeks later this box arrives. He opens it up, and inside there is a basketball signed by Yardley with a note. The note thanks him for being such a big fan and he tells my dad that he thought that he might appreciate this basketball, since he just had it lying around. What a class act!

  • I never even heard of George Yardley until this thread. What a great man. That is awesome.
  • I've only been doing ttm for about 6 years, but I wish I would have done it in the 70's and 80's when I was a kid.
  • I wish I was alive during the 1970s and 1980s to do it.
  • OJ Simpson. Had a pair of black gloves for him to sign.

  • I was fortune enough to get index cards signed by Yardley, but I never sent Yardley his rookie to sign. You could pick up a Yardley rookie unsigned in decent condition for a $30 to 40 signed a slabbed it would be $800 and he died in the mid 2000's. I regret not getting more Gene Hickersons.

Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. I started collecting signed golf balls in 2001. Hogan passed a couple years earlier and Nelson stopped signing golf balls about the same time and passed a couple years later.
  • Get everybody you can that looks like a future Hall of Famer while they are alive and sign for free. I ended up getting Jack Butler because I saw him in Future HOF Senior nominees. Butler now no longer signs for free and apparently missed an autograph signing because of health reasons.
  • I got Byron Nelson on the PGA Logo card from the first pro set golf set. I wish I tried Gene Sarazen when he signed. I don't like golf much at all. I have a few guys that I got ttm. Gary Player sent a signed photo. I got a pro set card signed and personalized to me from Arnold Palmer. I stopped collecting golf after Jack Nicklaus sent an autopenned photo and Tom Waston stamped my card.

Exactly. I got Butler about a year ago at this time.

I collected index cards before I collected signed cards TTM. I always regreted not sending rookies or vintage cards to Rizzuto, Snider and Kell. They were some of the best signers, all with fantastic cards that I never bothered to send.

  • I probably should have paid Rizzuto's fee.
  • Same here, JHS5120. I did a lot of custom index cards but should done have rookie cards.

John Wooden for sure. He was still doing TTM at the time but I knew he was in failing heath and didnt want to bother the man.
  • Wooden is one for sure it would have been nice to have gotten.
  • i sent to andy robustelli about a week before he passed. his family sent back my photo and also included a copy of andy's book. very nice of them. but the guys i just missed on are bill dudley, george blanda, joe perry.
  • Robustelli and Wooden were great signers til they died. I was fortune to get a few items signed by both.
  • Robustelli, Dudley and Blanda I got. Wooden and Perry unfortunately not.
