Worth getting the Silver Eagle Proof from the USmint?

tneigtneig Posts: 1,505 ✭✭✭
I can get Silver Eagles at far less than any online place, or Especially the mint. But not so much the Silver Eagle proof.

Should I just order them from the mint while they have them, such as the subscription program for 2012?
Is it really worth it, investment wise of a new BU plain Silver Eagle?

"BU plain Silver Eagle" is totally valued on the spot silver price. The proof has some collector value associated with it. Your choice......I do both...

plain bullion ASEs movewith the price of silver.

to some extent so do the Proofs, but you can have a situation where there are a lot of proofs for sale and if the silver price is down.... you just may sell for less than issue price. In short, Proofs hold a premium over spot because of their nice looks, but have no guarantee of downside price protection. You can still lose money on them, too.

Buy what you like. It's what you'll have to live with. But if all you are betting on is the price of silver, just buy the bullion ones from a cheaply priced coin dealer.

  • There are only 15 million (that's a lot) of them minted since 1986. Same coin different date. Any year makes a good example.

Bullion is better if looking for a silver investment.

If that is what you collect, then yes. If that is not what you collect, then no.
