What do you do with your Genuine holders?

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
Ive amassed about 20 of them over the last year submitting my Large Cent date set. What do you do with them?
Crack out and sell raw with problems noted? Sell as is?
Use as target practice?

In some cases I will be keeping them but others not.
All coins kept in bank vaults.

They'd always make nice album coins...I know I dont buy much early copper mostly because I cant grade it, nor trust raw stuff. So Im a buyer geni holdered stuff sometimes for type set coins with nice eye appeal.

I don't have any, and have never received a coin in a Genuine slab back from PCGS or NGC grading. I have dealers I trust screen my submissions so that I don't waste time and money.

Sell them without reserve at an online auction company like Teletrade, Greatcollections or Heritage Internet auctions. Even without reserves the coins almost always sell for fair value.

Do you agree with the designation? If not, why not resubmit?
If you do agree, then what you do depends....do you not want them? Do you want to place them raw, in an album, or do you want to get rid of them at any price?

Send them back in for a details grade. Then sell them.

Some I like some I don't. Some I paid problem free prices for as I didn't recognize the problem(s). After a close look, I agre with most of them. Some still puzzle me.

I only have one and it is a "92" for cleaned. I think I will crack it out and put it on my desk RAW for about a year then send it back in to PCGS. It should be nice and yellow and dirty and ugly for them at that point. image

I price them as though PCGS forgot to assign the grade I think it is.

I have only had two coins genuine. I submitted them again and both graded the second time around. One was an 1857 Flying Eagle that came back 91 and is now in a 64 holder. The second was an 1891 S dime that also came back 91 and is now in a 64+ holder.

I keep them until I can afford a problem free upgrade.

There's nothing wrong with owning a Gennie, particularly when it contains a coin like this. The 1855-D is one of the rarest Dahlonega half eagles.

If you don't want them, throw them on eBay at 99 cents no reserve. Chances are you will get more than you might expect.

Ankur - my advice would be to not get rid of the ones that still puzzle you. Buying problem coins is often called 'tuition', but that name only makes sense if you learn from the experience. Otherwise, it is just wasted money, as you won't recognize the same problems again - in holdered (or even stickered) coins as well as raw. Show them to someone who can explain why they would not grade. Make sure that you learn from the experience.

AnkurJ, I have the same issue with Large Cents. I listed mine on e-bay and was shock at the prices I was getting!

just sold a couple seated halves in genny holders on Greatcollections and was pleased with the results

GeorgeKellogg---That's a beautiful coin. I assume the two scratches on the reverse is why it wouldn't grade but it doesn't look that bad. In any event, that's a great coin.

I just sold a 1914-D Lincoln in a genuine F details slab (scratched) for $195 on ebay. They will bring money if it's the right coin. I knew when I sent it in it would probably genuine, but the scratches were old so I took a chance. I still did ok as I didn't pay strong money for the raw coin. Sometimes a gennie makes a nice album coin if the problem isn't too horrible and it's a good date.

Agree---that coin will be cracked out and used to plug a hole in a coin album.

I totally agree. I would give that coin a 45+ and a green sticker. So take that PCGS!

did you crack them out or just submit in the genuine holder for regrade? inquiring minds want to know.

That would make the most sense if you want an unbiased second opinion.

I thought about giving that 14-d another shot, but it wasn't worth it. Would have put me underwater on the coin and I just didn't think it had a chance to actually grade anyway. I was happy to make a few bucks and get rid of it.

I don't buy Genuine holdered coins.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
