Hi! My first poppage in about 10 years

Hi all. New to the boards. Besides the dinged up stuff I had ripping rack packs as a kid in the mid 70's to early 80's, I got back into it in the very early 90's pre-grading craze looking for higher end 70's stuff that my recent college grad budget could afford. I remember 9 or 10 years ago, I sent in to PSA thinking I'd get all 9's and 10's and got dissappointed, although I picked up a bunch of 9's in the 1968-75 range but a lot of 6 and 7's that I scratched my head. So fast forward. A few months back, I went over my modest ungraded collection. Cards I bought from a buck or 2 to perhaps as high $15 each for a high number back in the early 90's just outta college at shows in NJ. I now took out a magnifying glass and loop, looked them over as best I could and decided to take a shot. Here's what I got from the best i thought I had of what I have yet ungraded:

Only 2 headscratchers and one min size. Some of the 8's I thought were better but cest la vie. I have about another 200 raw cards of the same caliber of stars that have been sitting in card saver I and sleeve for a long time. I didn't send due to centering or a noticing surface scratches under the loop. Some have border notches as well. I'm thinking of sending the pre-1974's in anyway. Especially the hi-#'s. How far down will notching borders bring a card?

Hope you like the poppage!

That's a winner. The 1969 Oliva is a winner too.

    Welcome to the boards.

Edited to add: The 1972 Carlton PSA 9 and Seaver boyhood photo PSA 9 are winners too.

    image to the boards!!!

Congrats on your reentry to the submission game. Other than the 1967 Gibson and 1974 Kaline, that is a great submission IMO. They must have had a surface wrinkle that you didn't notice as that's what I'm always told from our resident experts.

    Looking forward to your posts.

Looks like those will put $600.00 - $700.00 in your pocket! Nice grades.
    STAY HEALTHY!

Congrats on your results. Anything 8 and up is very good, and a solid foundation for building up your grading skills.

As for notching borders, like any card issue, it depends on how severe it is, but my golden rule is anything that I question as to whether it's an issue, is an issue. This holds true for surface issues (which I'm guessing are responsible for many of your 8s) and border specking ... and finally centering and corners.

It can be a brutal exercise, and rather exhausting to look for every element that can be wrong with a card before deciding to submit it.

IMO a loop isn't necessary as you can see the corners and edges fine with the naked eye. I think it's more the surface issues that get by most people and then they wonder why their 9s and 10s ended up being 6s-8s. I suggest a single light source, and angle your card every which way to look for surface issues ... this process has drastically reduced the number of cards I sub ... and yielded me better results. >>

Excellent information here. I couldn't agree more other than I do use a loupe and a magnifying glass when my naked eye catches something that gets my attention. But then again my eyes aren't what they used to be. The big thing is "if it's an issue with you it's an issue." Be honest with yourself....just because you "want" it to be a 9 doesn't make it a 9.
Great work though...you've got an eye for quality.
