Frank & Sons - March 24th.

So, my buddy and I do a monthly trip to Frank and Sons, and usually we come out pretty good. This month (we went on Saturday), we didn't find much vintage, but I did spend about 350 bucks on some junk wax/foil. I originally brought 2100.00 to try and haggle away the 1954 Hank Aaron PSA 7 that the older gal has for sale, but after further inspection, it had a tilt cut and I didn't actually like it too much; had some fun instead (see below). It took us about 6 hours to break everything down, and we were both a little junk drunk afterwards.

Here's the before:

Some of the highlights are:

1 x 1982 Fleer Vending (#4) (Great box! Most cards were centered very well and the gloss is just amazing!)
1 x 1991 Stadium Club Series 1 (Pulled 2 Frank Thomas cards, which look great! Loved this card as a kid!)
6 x 1991 Stadium Club Series 2 (These boxes did NOT have sticking cards! All 10 Bagwell rookies that were pulled look great!)
2 x 1987 Fleer (Got one Barry Larkin that looks great, got some other Barry Bonds that also look pretty good).
1 x 1987 Topps Vending (junk)
1 x 1995 SP (Pulled a Jeter)
1 x 1989 Bowman (Pulled 2 Griffeys, one looks great!)
4 x 1988 Fleer (3 x Edgar Martinez Rookies, tons of Ryans, some Ken Caminiti - all look great)
1 x 1983 Vending (Got the Gwynn, Boggs, some were ok, some were not)
1 x 1982 Donruss Box (Got some really great cards out of this box - the Ripken is a little OC, though)
1 x 1981 Donruss (Got some good cards from this too! The Raines looks centered and good)
1 x 1987 Cello Pack with Larkin on Top

This one is my favorite buy of that day:

I bought the Larkin for 20 dollars...I think I kind of ripped him off. These are selling for 80-100.00 lately!

All in all, was a really fun day. The vendors were loving every minute of it too.

  • Looks like a lot of fun opening up all that stuff Justin. I loved that Frank Thomas card too and still do today. Its my favorite out of all of his cards including his 90 Leaf. Those Bagwells I remember were the big cards everyone wanted to pull for series 2 I remember. As far as the Barry PSA 10, they were in the $80-100 range around the time of induction but seemed to have cooled off back down to about the $40 average. Several buy it now's going on now for that price at least. You still got a great deal with that one either way. Great pick ups and thanks for sharing.

Where can you find an '87 Tiffany PSA 10 for $40 ? You can't. I believe you're referring to the non-Tiffany. The lowest BIN is $120, withe the majority being Best Offer
    at over $150.
  • Ohh you're right. I didn't even catch the "tiffany". Wow Justin!! For $20 bucks, that is pretty amazing.
  • Love seeing box breaks on these boards!!!!

Question, why do you insert the cards "upside down" in the top loader? Any particular reason?

I typically sleeve cards with penny sleeves then insert the card in upside down so the open side isn't exposed to the open part of the top loader. Not that it helps much, but just an added layer of protection.

I guess I could put the card in upside down in the penny sleeve.

  • Interesting! Frank & sons still going on strong, i am one of the original dealers from there, some of the best time in my life was spent there,, i wonder if there is another place like that in the country
where you can go every week twice a week for 25 years and pick up the current and vintage cards you may want or need or memorabilia and they still draw more people on any wednesday night than
any national over the last 10 years, not to mention saturday draw,,, just incredible!!

    Jose,

It's a terrific place, and definetly a great time! I believe it has changed quite a bit since days of long ago. There are only about 3-4 aisles now dedicated to cards. Comics, Magic/WoW/and the like have taken over most of the warehouse! Many a deal can still be had, though. Everytime I go and buy, I do turn a profit or find something that I would like to keep. image

Next month, I believe Bob Gibson will be signing there. I think I'm going to get his rookie auto'd at that time.
